LOST DEATH OF JOHN LUTHER HARRIS. Brother of Alderman T. A. Harris Succumbs to Appendicitis. John Luther Harris, aged died Sifnday at St.

Joseph's hospital, after i week's illness from appendicitis. He was a brother of Alderman Thomas Harris, and he leaves his wife, and two children, Nathan aged III, and Charles, aged 10. He leaves'also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James M.

Harris of Pittsburg, and two other brothers, George and James both of Pittsburg. The parents arrived today, having been notified of their son's death. Mr. Harris was at work in the glass works just a week ago Saturday. On Monday he became very ill and was taken to the hospital where an operation was performed and it was found that a large abscess had formed in his abdomen from the malady with which he was suffering.

Mr. Harris was a glass blower by occupation and a man of most exemplary character. He was a member of Che Cherry street Baptist church and was much interested in that organization. He was also a member of the order of the Maccab- bees, and the funeral will be under the auspices of that society. To Gain.

The lire department was called to the Lowell school building on Washington street Monday morning and upon arrival found that burning in great quantities was emerging from t)ie chimney and falling upon the roof when; it continued to burn. Window COMMITTEE ON CIVIC IMPROVEMENTS APPOINTED Announcement Made to City Council of Platfc for Municipal Beauti- Officers Named; Announcement was made to the Alton Cily council Saturday evening, of a plan for 1 beautifying the city of Alton and'the mayor appointed a committee consisting of himself and three aldermen, Messrs. olden, Sparks and Schoeffler, to confer witli the committee representing some private citizens who are acting on the advice of Mr. Wm. Eliot Smith, and who have subscribed money to a beginning in the work of transforming -some of Alton's unattractive places into beauty spots which would make toward a more beautiful Alton. The gentlemen who are back of the movement see' that Alton has natural advantages for being a beautiful city and believe that by doing a little work here and there and by setting out trees to shade the streets the city can be.made a much better place to live.

The following communication w'as presented to the city council. To the Honorable Mayor and City Council: respectfully represent your honorable body that our esijbemed citizen and largest manufacturer, Mr. Wm. Eliot Smith, who has but recently returned from touring the world, has determined to make an effprt looking to the beautifying of the streets and public places of Alton and has requested the undersigned to take the necessary steps to proceed with the work. We, therefore, petition your honorable body to appoint such committee as you deem advisable, with full power and authority to authorize and supervise the location and arrangement of the desired improvement and with further authority to assist in and report progress in the permanent organization of the project.

Thomas Cowling was grantee pet mission to lay a 12-inch sewer pip in Sixteenth street from his dwellin to connect with Piasa creek with th uiidestanding that anyone paying pr rata of the expense could use the sewer too. Chapman vs. Fred Chapman. Judge Hope also dismised the case of Hillis Pollard, accused of assault with intent to commit rape. Frank Griffith pleaded guilty to a charge of petit larceny and was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment the county jail. A.

Robert Jones, who was arested 1 yesterday on suspicion that he was a burglar and also a murderer, was released by the police this morning after several St. Louis detectives had lokcd at him and said that he was not the man wanted.

When Jones was arrested a lot of policy tickets and several pawn tickets for clothing were found on his person. It was sus- pecjed that he was connected with some burglaries around Alton, because of the goods he had pawned, but they were found to be something else than the stolen clothing which. is being sought. Mulville Gets Big Contract. Charles Mulville has been awarded the contract for doing a grading contract of yards at West Alton.

The Burlington obstructed the old county road leading from West Alton, to save itself from being flooded with water again, and agreed lo build a new county road which would be better than the old one and at the same time would prevent water breaking through the railway embankment again. Mr. Mulville will go to work immediately, lie has secured another big contract from the same railroad at Hannibal. Hard Coal, Hard Coal. have plenty of it and it will sold at a very low figure.

Deinuth was notified today that all of the six inmates of the pest- house are ill with small-pox and it became necessary to scud out a nurse to take care of them. Three of the persons confined there had been exposed to the disease and three others were sick with it. The exposed persons wore taken down yesterday, but none of the cases is dangerous.
