EIGHT EVENING TIMES, CUMBERLAND. MJD., TUESDAY. DECEMBER ISMS Phone 4 MO- for a WANT-AD Taker Broadway— Opera Fan. By CVNTII1A LOWKY Associated Press Stuff Writer NEW YORK—Mrs. Betty Henderson, septuagenarian star of tjie Metropolitan Opera opening, Sherry's Bar division, snys that she's misunderstood. She's really a great lover of the classics—opera, that is. •"I don't understand 'by people pay so much attention to me," she complained bitterly. "After • all I »per.t the whole evening drinking orange Juice—I tried to gel milk but they didn't have any." It was Mr. Packy O'Gntty, her escort, who attracted attention, she's decided. "He's my boxing instructor," the 72-year-old opera goer explained, "We go a couple of rounds three times a week. I do it to keep limber. The attention also might have been due to an episode at the 1947 openIns: Mrs. Henderson was shown pictorially with a leg placed on a table. "A misunderstanding," she ex- 1 plained. "I'd been suffering from bursltis, but I got there all right. And as I was leaving the box at the end of an act, I made a misstep, I didn't fall, but I wrenched my'knee. When I got down-to the bar. I was in bad pain and a friend said, 'Let's take a look at it.' So we did ...".... She paused: "Besides, there aren't many women of my age who. could' GETJ their -leg up on' a table, ha!" This year she waltzed in a little lute with u party of three. She \va.s in mauve taffeta. But the conversation piece was her bright 'henna hair: a huge high piece on top, find four long, corkscrew curls. It created something of a sensation. "Of course the top piece and the curls were false," she explained, "but I want you to know my own hair is very long, Indeed." It has only taken a couple of years for Mrs. Henderson to land among the few sights of the Met • opening. Others include the dowager Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt and her headache band, and Mrs. George Washington Kavanaujh and her fabulous jewels. Limber Betty is the widow or an extremely wealthy Oklahoma oil man who died five years ago. For a number of years she has lived with her, mother. 37-year-old Mrs. Robert Jerome Faulkner in a plush overstuffed Park Avenue apartment. Originally" she 'was Elizabeth Peril' Faulkner of Boston—convent-bred, too, she says. Mrs. Henderson complains that "nobody ever tells" how she used to be president of the National Federation of Music Clubs and how she was decorated for good works in Rome by the former Queen of Italy. "And I've been going to the opera for 38 years, too," she continued. "And 1 , do -you know, this year John Talbot had to pay $400 for our four tickets—for those upstairs seals, too. "And. dear, ciid you notice I was wearing Russian sables? I don't usunlly after dark, yon know, but I wanted everyone to see that dcrful bow on the back ol 1 my dress.'
