(UPI) Running back Dwight Sullivan scored on'a- 14-yard run bte in the third quarter yesterday to give 19th-ranked North Carolina State a 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland in a tight-defensive struggle. Maryland's offense was non-existent as the Terappins lost their third straight game to even their record at 3-3.

Besides, coming up with several key turnovers, the Wake Forest defense held North Carolina tailback Amos Lawrence, the nation's No. 2 rusher, to 34 yards on 24 carries.

(UPI) Matt Simon ran 11 yards for one touchdown and Buck Belue threw 11 yards to Carmon Prince for another in a four-minute span of the third quarter yesterday to give Georgia a 21-14 upset victory over 12th-ranked Louisiana State. Simon, a sophomore who missed Georgia's opening three losses because of an injury, rushed for 126 yards and his TD run was a sprint to the outside that put the Bulldogs ahead 14-7 with 12:32 left in the third period. The next time Georgia got the ball the Bulldogs drove 51 yards and Belue found Prince in the left corner of the end zone for the 21-7 lead with 8:31 left in the third period.

Florida St. 17, Miss. St. 6 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UPI) Tenth-ranked and unbeaten Florida State shut down 20th-ranked Mississippi State's wishbone offense, and quarterback Jimmy Jordan led the Seminoles to two second-quarter touchdowns last night in a 17-6 victory over the Bulldogs.

The stingy Seminole defense held the Bulldogs to a late fourth-quarter touchdown by Michael Haddix and forced three fumbles and two pass interceptions. Kentucky 14, Mississippi 3 LEXINGTON, Ky. (UPI) Freshman quarterback Terry Henry came off the bench last night and threw two touchdown passes to lead Kentucky to a 14-3 win over Mississippi. Henry, in his first collegiate appearance, drove his team 71 yards in 10 plays to a touchdown on a 2-yard pass to end Jim Campbell with 3:35 to go in the first half and then with 13:47 remaining in the Same, Henry hit running back Chris ones with a 6-yard touchdown pass. Tech 0 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UPI) Elusive Jimmy Streater passed for two touchdowns, scampered 43 yards for another and became Tennessee's all-time offensive leader in sparking the Volunteers to a 31-0 rout of mistake-prone Georgia Tech. Streater picked up 96 yards passing and 103 rushing to eclipse former quarterback Condredge Holloway as Tennessee's all-time offensive leader. Streater, in his four seasons, has amassed 4,210 yards, compared to Holloway's 4,068. Alabama 40, Florida 0 GAINESVILLE, Fla.

(UPI) Second-ranked Alabama, 'sparked by a 73- yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Don Jacobs, overpowered punchless Florida, 40-0, yesterday for its 14th straight victory over a two-year span. Jacobs, who divided the quarterbacking with Steadman Shealy, broke away on the first play in the second half to give Alabama a 24-0 lead. Auburn 52, Vanderbilt 35 AUBURN, Ala. (UPI) Auburn's Joe Cribbs ran for 219 yards and three West Virginia opened up a 14-6 lead on Dixon's plunge at 4:49 of the second period, just 3:25 after Duggan's TD. West Virginia needed just five plays to march 45 yards for the score, with Luck accounting for 34 yards on two BC moved to within 14-9 on the 42-yard field goal by Cooper with 49 seconds left in the half.

(UPI) Tailback Mike Sherlock rushed for 150 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown gallop, to lead 18th-ranked Navy to a 24-7 trouncing of William and Mary. two plays later Luck connected with Miller on a slant pattern for the winning score. BC then drove to the West Virginia 21, but Cooper missed a 38-yard field goal try in the waning seconds.

Palazola, who ended with 131 yards rushing, had moved BC to a 15-14 lead with his 69-yard run on an option at 6:25 of the third quarter. Cooper then con-' nected on a 35-yard field goal seven minutes later to give the Eagles the 18-14 lead entering the fourth period. BC took the opening kickoff and drove .79 yards in eight plays to take a 6-0 lead on Gamble's 17-yard sweep around left end. The Eagles missed a chance to pad the lead when Dan Conway fumbled at the West Virginia 3-yard line and the Mountaineers then drove 97 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-6 lead on Luck's pass to Duggan. The TD toss was the only completion in three attempts by Luck in the firt half.

DALLAS (UPI) A steady diet of misdirection running plays by A.J. Jones, a one-handed touchdown catch by tight end Steve Hall and a swarming defense that shut down the nation's No. 1 scoring machine carried fifth-ranked Texas to a 16-7 victory over the third-rated Oklahoma Sooners yesterday. Texas' NCAA leading defense kept pressure on the Sooners all afternoon and Longhorns kicker John Goodson contributed three field goals to knock the Sooners out of the unbeaten ranks. Both sides scored after an enemy mistake in the first half, but the Longhorns clung to a 10-7 halftime lead and then left things to the defensive unit which closed off Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims and kept the Sooners in poor field position almost the entire afternoon.

It was only the second victory in the past nine years for Texas in this 74-year-' old series and boosted the Longhorns to 4-0 for the season. Oklahoma fell to 4-1. Oklahoma managed only two first downs in the first half and one of those came on an 11-yard scoring pass from J.C. Watts to Stanley Wilson. That touchdown came after Texas' Johnny Johnson had fumbled away a punt at his own 16 and the score gave the Sooners a 7-3 lead.

But late in the second half, Texas defensive back Derrick Hatchett intercepted a' pass by Watts and ran it back 36 vards to the Oklahoma 5. On third-and-two, quarterback Donnie Little lofted a pass toward Hall, who made a one-handed catch deep in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. The Owls led at halftime, 21-17. Temple gained 377 yards rushing and 113 yards passing in winning its fifth game against one loss. Syracuse dropped to 4-2.
