2 Pittsburgh Press, Oct. 7, 1 979 Steelers' 'Bull' Wants To Beef Up His Conditioning CLEVELAND Jim Brown of the Browns and Jim Taylor of the Packers were heroes of Sidney Thornton when he was growing up in New Orleans. Now Thornton is running like the big league back the Steelers envisioned him to be when they drafted him second out of X's O's Northwestern Louisiana three years ago. He's running hard and with purpose, but he is still not pleased with himself. "I have to improve my conditioning," he said, looking forward to today's 4 p.m.

battle here with the Browns. "I'm not as strong as I want to be. I have to be able to get out of the blocks better, and not run out of gas on long runs." what a great quarterback the New England Patri- ots have, and somebody asked him if he meant Steve Grogan. "No, that kid Matt Cavanaugh," said Rooney. "We should have never let him get out of Rich Milot, a rookie linebacker from Coraopolis and Penn State, is starting for the Washington Redskins.

"Our players have to have strength to hold up," says Redskins Coach Jack Pardee, "and we think Milot has that ability. He's inexperienced, but he's making progress. He really understands what we're doing. He's the type of player who can help us improve as a team." Former Pitt standouts Marty Schottenheimer and Free Hoaglin are coaches with the Detroit Lions. Hoaglin, who played alongside Coach Monte Clark here with the Browns in the late '60s, jt is high on Keith Dorney, an offensive tackle who.

was the Lions' top draft pick from Penn State. Joe Paterno would be proud to know these -things. ALL IN THE FAM-A-LEE: Pittsburgh sports -fans get a treat whichever way they look. Yester- day, Pirate fans were lined up at Three Rivers Stadium to buy tickets for the upcoming Series when the Steelers started arriving to catch their buses to Cleveland. As the Steelers emerged from their cars, they were cheered by the crowd, -and many youngsters swarmed around them had the Steelers signing autographs.

left in 1970 to sign with the Steelers. "I'm taking a course in anatomy and physiology," said Blount, "and I'm learning a lot about myself." He said he still does not understand why the Steelers have suffered so many injuries. There is not any mystery surrounding Dwight White's status with the Steelers. He's simply second-string, that's all, and now he has to wait his turn to get back in the lineup. It's still surprising that he wasn't even used in a goal-line defense at Philadelphia last Sunday.

It's a good bet now that if the Steelers had to do It all over again, they would have retained rookie Dwaine Board as a defensive end. He is now with the San Francisco 49ers. Line coach Rollie Dotsch says that Ted Petersen played Claude Humphrey off his feet in the second half of the game with the Eagles last Sunday. Setting the record Manny Sistrunk of the Eagles is the cousin of Otis Sistrunk, the Steelers' old nemisis with the Oakland Raiders. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were 5-0 going into today's game with the Giants in the Jersey Meadowlands.

Rookie flanker Gordon Jones from Pitt made his first catch in the pros a memorable one, grabbing a 37-yard touchdown pass to put the Bucs in the lead against Baltimore earlier this season. Steeler owner Art Rooney was talking about He is one of the nicest, most easy-going guys on the team. He is very down-to-earth, which one might expect from a farm boy from Tomahawk, Wis. i Sitting next to Webster on a plane, one can learn how to plant and grow potatoes, which is what Mike's family does, or get a strong recommendation on "The Muppet Movie," which Mike and his 3-year-old daughter, Brook Winter, enjoyed so much. Loren Toews, who will be on the injured reserve list with a neck injury for at least the next three weeks, was talking about how popular football is in his neighborhood in McMurray.

"It took my wife and I about, a month to come up with a name for our new daughter this summer," said Toews. "My son (Aaron Joseph) heard us talking it over one day, and said, 'Hey, how about naming her Franco? I'm telling you, the little kids in. my neighborhood are all fired up about the Steelers. John Banaszak, the bubbly defensive end of the Steelers, is still looking for his second interception. He bad his first, of course, against Dan Pastorini of the Oilers in the home opener at Three Rivers Stadium.

"They haven't thrown in my area since then," kids Banaszak. Mel Blount is going to night school at Allegheny Community College, taking a course he needs to get his degree from Southern University, which he "Then people started talking about 'The Bull' and I could see for myself that he was a good back," said Hawthorne. "Maybe I can put some heat on him. I pick up some things from him and he knows he has to stay on the job. It makes competition a little stif er for me, with Sidney here.

It makes me know I have to work that much harder to get more action. He's good and he's going to get better." The Steelers came here here yesterday by bus, but normally they travel by airplane, when they do, J.T. Thomas and Lynn Swann always sit together in the next-to-the-last row on the left-hand side of the plane in what Swann calls "our superstition seat." Swann always sits by the window and Thomas on the aisle, and the seat in between is off-limits toanybody else. When Thomas wasn't traveling; the team last' season, because he was sidelined by a blood disorder, Swann "retired" his seat for the season, and kept it open for his return. Earlier this season, the two even chased big Mike Webster out of their reserved seats.

Thomas sells insurance, and he says his customers' monthly payments always seem to lapse during the football season. "I think they lose too much money betting on football games," he reasons. Webster wasn't hard to chase oat of the seat. By Jim O'Brien At the same time, the Steelers' scouting department doesn't believe we have seen the real Greg Hawthorne yet "He still isn't exploding the way we know he can," says Dick Haley, the head of player personnel. "But he's coming along." Hawthorne, the No.

Dale Castro, who is 10 for 10 in field goals this year, punted 11 times to tie a school record. In fact, Giuseppe Harris ruined the record by partially blocking a Eunt in the second quarter. Partially locked kicks are considered team punts. Harris, a converted linebacker, inter-. cepted two of the three passes for the young defensive secondary.

We don't need that" So Millen and Clark lined up side by side, Clark handling double and triple team blocking. Millen took running backs. And end Larry Kubin took the quarterback, sacking 6-7 Mike Tice three times.

Against this alignment, Maryland gained only 35 yards rushing, Tice com- Eleted only three of 20 attempts and lilback Charlie Wysocki, ranked third in the nation in rushing, produced only 51 yards on 19 carries. "It's awful tough double-teaming Millen and Clark when they're next to each other," explained Paterno. "But overall we just played better. All I told the team is that we needed a solid, no-nonsense game." And his team responded quickly. fore two minutes had elapsed, the Lions had a 7-0 lead.

Punter Ralph Giacommarra booted a high, long punt Maryland freshman Mike Lewis fumbled after a Grover Edwards hit and Matt Bradley recovered at the Maryland 14. The next play, Matt Suhey danced through a big hole for a 14-yard touchdown. "It was a new play we installed this week which gets the ball back to the fullback like he was a tailback," Suhey said. Dayle Tate, Paterno's struggling quarterback, hit three straight completions to set up the next first-quarter score, a 36-yard field goal by Herb Menhardt The Lions had a 10-0 lead and were on their way to evening their record at 2-2. Penn State also had field position.

Only three times in three quarters did Maryland have the ball outside of its 30-yard line. Giacommarra set up the next touchdown with a punt inside the five. Tice, rolling to pass near his goalline, was pulled down by Millen. The ball squirted loose and was recovered by Kubin at the Maryland two. Two plays later, Booker Moore scored from the two and Penn State led, 17-0, before halftime.

Millen was a question mark for the game. He injured his back in practice three days before the Nebraska game and practiced very little this week. "On Thursday, I couldn't get out of bed, Leo Wisniewski. had to carry me out," Millen explained. "I didn't know until before the game if I could play until before the game.

Sherrill then chided the media. We got a little anxious and fumbled rv again." Offensively, the Lions finished with 218 yards rushing and 100 yards passing.

Freshman Curt Warner left the game in the second quarter with a hamstring pull. He had pulled it earlier in the week. Warner had 35 yards on seven carries. As for Clark's switch to nose guard, "I'm not going to comment on it until I know more about the position," he said. "But how would you like me to beat on you all?" I guess he can't." Concerning Marino, Trocano said, "I thought he played well. When he was in there we were doing what we should have been doing all day." Marino, who completed nine of 13 passes for 112 yards, wanted no part of getting involved in a controversy. After all, he's only a freshman even if he doesn't play like one. "I've been In competition with Rick all along," he said, "but right now I can't say anything about that. The pressure of major college football doesn't seem to be 'bothering Marino.

"I'm more relaxed now than at the start of the season," he said. "That's the main thing. Just be relaxed and keep your head together." The Pitt defense was together all afternoon. It limited the Eagles to barely more than two yards a carry rushing, even though freshman Shelby Gamble Eicked up 121 yards on 21 carries. Gam-le had a 51-yard run in the first half.

The strength of the defense was in its ability to make up for the frequent turnovers by the offense. Time and again BC had good field position in the first half thanks to two fumbles and two interceptions. But Pitt always held. BC did get close enough three times for John Cooper to try field goals, but he missed all three, from 31, 27 and 52 yards out As Sherrill put it, "Hugh Green was Hugh Green." The All-America defensive end had nine tackles and created a fumble. But what was more important to the Pitt defense were cornerback Terry White and strong safety Carlton Williamson who are not Hugh Green but who were playing like him.

Williamson led Pitt with 11 tackles and White had eight. He twice broke through to sack quarterback Jay Palazola, who had a miserable day. "We knew we had to stop their quarterback from scrambling and that's what we did," said White, a junior from Georgia. Palazola, who went into the game averaging close to seven yards a carry, finished with minus-20 yards on 19 carries. Through the air he could complete just six of 16 attempts.

Only following Doug Alston's interception of Trocano's pass late in the third quarter on the Pitt 45 was BC able to move. And even then it took the Eagles four tries from the six to score. The defense operated with a consistency that the offense simply can't muster. "The offense could have had a good day if we didn't keep stopping ourselves," said Trocano. "Once we stop doing that we're going to be okay." The difference between me and him is that Chuck can smile right after a loss. It takes me an hour." Weaver said he hadn't given much thought to the specifics of playing the Pirates just yet. His pitching rotation is not yet decided but it doesn't mater too much, because he is especially deep in starters. "I have to talk to (scout) Jimmy Russo first before we decide on the rotation," said Weaver. "I don't know if we'll go to left-handers or right-handers.
