04 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1. 1997 Money THE SALINA JOURNAL U.S. ECONOMY Fed holds steady on interest rate Consumer inflation is lowest so far this year since 2.6 percent in '65 By DAVE SKIDMORE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve officials opted Tuesday to hold short-term interest rates steady in the face of data showing healthy but not excessive economic growth and little inflation. The central bank announced it had adjourned a three-hour, 45- minute closed-door meeting of its policy-making committee without changing the benchmark rate on overnight loans between banks. It has been at 5.5 percent since "They have really no inflation to point to. We have a healthy economy with little or no inflation," Sung Won Sohn economist, Norwest Corp., Minneapolis March, when the Fed bumped it up by a quarter percentage point to curb potential excess demand viewed as inflationary. An increase Tuesday would have slowed the economy by raising borrowing costs for millions of American consumers and businesses. The decision for no change has been widely anticipated and, the day before it, the Dow Jones average of industrial stocks had moved to a six-week high. It lost some ground after the Fed's announcement, closing at 7,945.26, down 46.17. Early this year, monetary policy-makers were alarmed by torrid 4.9 percent economic growth in the first quarter. It abated to 3.3 percent in the second quarter and, in the view of many economists, will slip under 3 percent in the second half and next year. But with unemployment under 5 percent for the first time in 24 years, that's still too fast for the comfort of some. Nevertheless, inflation has improved. Consumer prices — excluding volatile food and energy costs have risen at a scant 2.2 percent annual rate so far this year, down from 2.6 percent last year and the best since 1965. "They have really no inflation to point to. We have a healthy economy with little or no inflation. The Federal Reserve would have difficulty explaining to the public and to Congress why they raised interest rates under those circumstances," said economist Sung Won Sohn of Norwest Corp. in Minneapolis. Economic data reported Tuesday did little to alter economists' views. Internet Explorer 4.0 is Mi : crosoft's latest challenge to browser pioneer Netscape Communications, which remains the most popular software for getting around on the Internet. Internet Explorer 4.0, by working closely with Microsoft's Windows 95 operating software, lets people easily point and click between desktop files and Web sites. The icons for both PC files and far-flung Web pages are similar in prominence. The browser also incorporates "push" technology, sending tailored Web information directly to your desktop so that you don't have to search for what you need. The latest Netscape Navigator browser, released four months ago, already has such a feature. Judge rules Toys R Us didn't play fair WASHINGTON — Hollywood Hair Barbie could soon be play- •ing Monopoly with Mr. Potato Head along the aisles of discount warehouse clubs nationwide after a judge ruled that Toys R Us didn't play fair against some of its biggest rivals. Toys R Us, the nation's largest toy store chain, unfairly used its clout to bully toy makers to stop selling Barbie and other popular games and toys to discount warehouse competitors like Price Club, Sam's and BJ's, according to a ruling by administrative Judge James P. Timony, announced Tuesday. The company illegally warned toy makers it might stop carrying certain toy lines if the products also were offered to rival discount stores, Timony ruled. A spokeswoman for the Paramus, N. J.-based chain said the company would appeal. New $50 bills come out this month WASHINGTON — Millions of redesigned $50 bills will start circulating Oct. 27 as planned despite a tiny printing flaw on 30 million of the bills that will be held back for the time being. The new bill features an off-center, enlarged portrait of U.S. Grant, the nation's 18th president, on the front and an updated engraving of the U.S. Capitol on the back. It also has a large high-contrast numeral on the back, designed to make the bill easier to identify for older people and others with poor vision.
