Government lawyers hailed the conviction as a victory in the broad federal anti-monopoly drive and a blow at factory control of car fin--ancing. The corporations were charged with forcing dealers to finance sales of cars through GMAC. Others of motordom's "Big Three" 0 Ford and Chryslr- were pledged to steer clear of kind of coercion of which GMC was con- victed. They were indicted, too, here in May, 1938, but later in consent decrees agreed to make the General Motors case a test. The jury, which reached its verdict at 8:15 and reported 25 minutes later, had deliberated 25 hours and 40 minutes on evidence given by more than 200 witnesses in a five and a half weeks trial.

John Boylan, secretary of the Nevada Tuberculosis association, in speaking before the Ely Lions club, stated that of the funds raised twenty per cent would go to the state association and the balance would remain in White Pine county for a drive against tuberculosis here. While the local funds will not be used in caring for. patients afflicted with the disease, the money will be spent in educational purposes which will include the showing of motion pictures and in lectures to educate the people to combat the disease.

Also, skin tests will be given children in the county schools to attempt to discover any cases existing in a primary state. According to Boylan, part of the funds sent the state association will be returned to the county in literature and motion picture films. Tests in the Kimberly school last year are said to have shown two cases prevalent. The speaker said that ninety per cent of tuberculosis cases are cured when found in the primary stage, fifty per cent cured in intermediate stage and twenty-five per cent cured in more advanced cases. During the past ten years he has engaged in the study and promotion of the growth of flax in Oregon, and the development of the industry in the Williamette valley area. The group of designs which will be shown at his lecture are the work of Ruth Reeves, who specializes in Guatemalan patterns; Tony Sarge, well-known magazine illustrator, and Marguerite Margentime, whose work on Victorian styles appeared in the. fashion magazines several years ago. The law permits him to fine the corporations up to $5,000 each. If the individuals also had been convicted they would have been liable to prison terms of up to a year as well as fines. Holmes Baldridge, chief of government counsel, termed the verdict "a step forward in the (attorney general) anti-trust division's attempt to obtain free competition in industry." John Thomas Smith, GM vice president, in charge of the defense, saw inconsistency in a verdict ac quitting individuals while convicting corporations.

In the trial, started October 9, dealer witnesses said GM officials had told them they would lose their franchises unless they financed with GMAC. Corporation executives denied making such threats.
