Pittsburgh Press, Aug. 8, 1 979 A-1 5 Con Man Cops A Flee Before Sentencing At that point, Scarlata told the court that his client had kept his promise of maintaining regular contact with him. He said he spoke to North Monday and was told that North would attend court for sentencing. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Schwabenland then told the court that he also spoke to North and had received a much different response.

"North said that returning to jail would be like death for him," Schwabenland said. Forming New Stars U.S. Marshal Howard Turner said his department would make sure that North didn't get the last laugh. He said he had instructed his staff to contact agents in Dallas the home of North's ex-wife and Ohio to find the convicted con man. He did not say why he would look for North in Ohio.

"We'll keep looking and talking to people until we find him and bring him back so he can receive the sentence he deserves," Turner said. (UPI) A 15-year-old girl, one of three teen-agers arrested in the abduction and shotgun slaying of a young Kansas banker, has been ordered detained on unspecified charges.

A Marion County juvenile judge yesterday ordered the girl, whose identity has not been released, held in the Harvey County Juvenile Center in Newton and also ordered that charges be filed against a 16-year-old boy arrested last week. The nature of the charges against the second juvenile and his identity also were not released in the death of Grant E. Avery, 24, vice president of the Pea-body State Bank. scene. Apparently believing that North's sons really needed him, McCune released him on bond until sentencing.

But yesterday, when it was time to sentence him, there was no sign of Irving North. Appearing bitter, the judge apologized to those attending court for the inconvenience of coming for nothing. He instructed the U.S. marshal's office to begin a search that would bring North back to Pittsburgh. Gas Clouds WASHINGTON (UPI) Thousands of huge clouds of gas and dust are slowly compacting into new stars in the Milky Way, according to a team of scientists.

A group of astronomers yesterday reported the discovery of the clouds, the most massive objects in the galaxy, measuring anywhere from 100,000 to a couple of million times as massive as the sun. A few of these clouds were previously known to exist, but "what we didn't know was how predominant they are," said Dr. Philip Solomon of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. "People always knew there were lots of interstellar clouds," he said. "What's different about these clouds is that they are very massive and that they're held together by their own self gravity." Solomon, Dr.

David Sanders of the state university, and Dr. Nicholas Scoville of the University of Massachusetts estimated that 5,000 of the massive clouds exist in the Milky Way. The only other objects in the Milky Way that approach the stars in mass are some 200 "globular clusters" -groupings of thousands of stars each By MICHAEL ARKUSH Just when it was thought his bag of tricks was finally empty, Irving North pulled out one more. And now, it seems, his latest trick has taken the highest toll on U.S. Judge Barron P.

McCune, because this time, the judge was conned. North, 49, of Beverly Hills, was convicted three weeks ago of 19 counts in schemes in which five Pittsburgh banks were defrauded. He was the "inside man" in a sophisticated pattern of bad check writing, phony credit card use and interstate crime that began several years ago. He bad conned the city's biggest banks. Although North maintained throughout the trial that he was the victim of a conspiracy by two former business associates, the jury took only 15 minutes to reach a guilty verdict.

But once he knew he was headed for a return trip to prison, the con man figured he'd play one last hand. He wanted to stay out of jail as long as possible. Bringing his two sons who are not old enough to attend school to the trial almost every day, North seemed to be trying to persuade the court that the youngsters would suffer if the judge sent him to jail. During the trial, North's sons sat quietly, stared at the judge, and seemingly prayed that he would spare their dad another trip to jail. And when the time came, North acted out his role to perfection.

He told Judge McCune that he needed to take his sons to Dallas so they could stay with his ex-wife. He promised he would keep in regular contact with his lawyer, Charles Scarlata, and that he would show up in court for sentencing. Because the matter in the newly discovered clouds is held together by. its own gravity, the clouds are collapsing and forming new stars. But Solomon said the star formation process is very slow, indicating something is interfering with the compacting process. "We don't completely understand what's holding up the clouds," he said.

Actor Estrada Off Critical List LOS ANGELES (UPI) Actor Erik Estrada, costar of "CHiPs," apparently will survive a serious motorcycle crash, which the producers plan to show in the TV series. Estrada was taken off the critical list yesterday and "now appears to be out of danger" of dying, said a spokesman for UCLA Medical Center. However, he remained in serious condition. The crash partially collapsed both lungs and broke his breastbone, right wrist and three ribs. ton urv mil aliltii).

Swiss Killed Soviet Envoy, Izvestia Says MOSCOW (UPI) The Soviet newspaper Izvestia charged today that a Soviet diplomat found with his wrists slashed in a bathtub in Switzerland in April had been killed and hinted that Swiss counterintelligence agents may have been involved. The newspaper suggested that the diplomat, Leonid Panchenko, may have been killed by agents from the West who botched an attempt to weaken his mind with LSD.

It said Soviet agents were not allowed to attend an autopsy and that Soviet medical authorities who later examined the corpse believe that some of the internal organs may have been switched with those from another body. "We demand that the Swiss authorities establish the truth and call those guilty to account," Izvestia said. Panchenko was a 32-year-old Soviet diplomat and employee of the secretariat of the International Cocoa Organization. Izvestia said his body was found April 7 in the bathroom of the Hotel Aarauerhoff in the Swiss town of Aarau. JACKSON, Miss.

(UPI) Evelyn Gandy, a veteran of more than three decades in state government, outpolled five male opponents in her bid to become Mississippi's first woman governor, but faces an Aug. 28 runoff for the Democratic nomination. Miss Gandy, 58, now serving as lieutenant governor, told a cheering crowd of supporters last night she was "so appreciative" of the impressive vote. Former Lt. Gov.

William Winter, another veteran campaigner making his third race for the state's top office, ran a strong second and will face Miss Gandy in the runoff. McGee said the Stanwix project doesn't pose nearly the problems the city expects to encounter next spring when it does similar work at the Wood Street intersection of Fort Pitt Boulevard. He said the city will have to cope with the additional problems of closing the ramp to the Monongahela Wharf and maintaining PAT trolley traffic, which now uses the intersection. On the Greenfield Bridge, which will probably be closed next month, McGee said, "Everything will be removed except the concrete arches themselves.

Then, we'll replace the columns and bridge deck." For years, the huge concrete structure over the Parkway East has had wooden scaffolding pinned to its belly to keep broken concrete from falling on vehicles. In the East End, the Public Works Department still will have the Larimer Avenue, Herron Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and Bloomfield bridges closed after opening Aiken Avenue Bridge in October and Centre Avenue Bridge in November. 10th St. Bridge To Be Closed The 10th Street Bridge between Second Avenue and the South Side will be closed to traffic from 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m.

The bridge will be reopened Monday to two-lane traffic for one week while the construction area is cleaned and lane striping is completed. The span over the Monongahela River will be opened to four-lane traffic on Aug. 20, but painting will go on until mid-September. Nader Group Seeks TV Commercial Curb WASHINGTON (UPI) The National Citizens Committee for Broadcasting, headed by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, is asking the government to set a limit on the amount of time TV stations can devote to commercials and other interruptions.

In petition being filed today with the Federal Communications Commission, the group suggested a ceiling of 10 minutes out of every hour for non-program material five minutes per hour where Children's programming is involved. 11, a Our 2-lb. paMagr of chirkpn I fifr MM.iZllXh 1 OQi; V- franks nilh ea. has, I 6U LOUlU I friwn in fnwr rwdi I of thfsf a(lerlispd hems. iWAl I WCknA I O.

(UPI) Postmaster General William Bolger says higher postal rates, more mechanization and improved management has the U.S. Postal Service headed toward something it hasn't accomplished in 34 years a profit. Therefore, Bolger added, the service probably won't ask for another postal rate increase for at least another two years. "We have a $518 million surplus to date, but that probably won't hold up to that amount," Bolger said yesterday, adding any surplus reduction by the end of the 1979 fiscal year Sept 30 would not represent a "substantial portion."
