Pittsburgh Press, July 29, 1979 $7.1 Million Stolen In MARSEILLES, France (UPI) A bandit stole $7.1 million from an armored car company last night in what police said appeared to have been an inside job and was one of the biggest robberies in French history. Polices said the main suspect was a 33- year -old employee of an armored car firm known as "Protection Sud." Police said the employee asked three other men working with him to remove their pistols because they needed cleaning. As they did so, the suspect handcuffed the men and locked them in a lounge. Police said the suspect knew the combination to the room containing the day's receipts from several of a supermarket chain and other stores as well as how to disconnect the alarm system. The robber piled the money into several bags and fled in a car owned by the armored car company.

The holdup was much larger than two previous armored car robberies in the Marseilles area earlier this year, both of which remain unsolved. U.S. Envoy Returns MANAGUA, Nicaragua (UPI) U.S. Ambassador Lawrence A. Pezzullo flew to Managua yesterday to present his credentials to the new revolutionary government and deliver emergency food and medical supplies to the war-torn nation.

The return of Pezzullo, who helped arrange the departure of former President Anastasio Somoza, came just hours after the five-member junta announced Cuba would send hundreds of doctors and teachers plus medical supplies and food to help the country's massive reconstruction effort. The U.S. Embassy reported yesterday the United States has already provided Nicaragua with 800 tons of food and said an additional 1,000 tons of emergency supplies was on the way by ship.
