Jelke was released on ball la the cafe society vice case aftef completing the gun charge sen* tence. He was driven away in an atitc^ mobile to his mother's farm in Danbury, Conn. Jelke is under a 3 to 6 year sentence in the vice case. News* men and public were barred from the sensational trial. Jelke appealed, contending he was not given a public trial. Supreme Court Justice Joseph A, Cox last Friday issued a certificate of reasonable Joubt on the point and said a five-judge appellate division should rule on that point. Cox also set Jelke's bail at $50,000, and added the young Broadway playboy could be released aftc completing the gun charge sentence. With time off for good behavior, Jelke was eligible for release today. The gun charges came up during the vice probe. Two guns were found, one in Jelke's apartment and another in his car. He was convicted and sentenced on the gun charge in a separate case. Used Appliance Clearance Oil Heater,* 4-room $50 Refrigerators — $25—$45—$55 2 Washers, each — $15 Auto. SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Rainiers announced Monday the signing of Gerry Priddy, Detroit Tiger first baseman, as playing- manager for 1954. Deey Soriano, general manager of (he Pacific Coast League Club, said Priddy, 33, of Los Angeles, was signed to a one year contract. Terms were not disclosed, but Soriano said the veteran big leaguer would get a "handsome salary." The Detroit infielder will succeed Bill Sweeney, who resigned recently as Rainiers' manager after completing two years of a three- year contract. Soriano said waivers have been asked on Priddy by Detroit and he will be declared a free agent within a few days. Priddy broke in with the New York Yankees 13 years ago; going to the World Champions from Kansas City along with Phil Rizut- to. BUTTERFIELD NEW YORK (^—Television, accused of sapping boxing's gate receipts, also is a well-heeled "angel" which has been pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars annually into its coffers. The money from sponsors and networks, but mainly sponsors, is for rights to the fights, some championship, some average and others just so-so, and is distributed to promoters, managers and. the boxers. No exact figure is available but the yearly revenue for boxing through the four networks must come close to $2,700,000. Add to this an estimated three million more for network time and related costs, and the grand total passes an impressive six millions—a real business itself. Pioneer sponsor in fight telecasting is Gillette, which also goes in heavily for bowl football, the World Series and other big sport events. It uses 74 stations of NBC- TV on 41 Friday nights for bouts from New York and other arenas, plus an occasional championship match. This schedule was begun on radio in June 1941, and is'still carried by ABC. Television was added Sept. 29, 1944.
