B-4 Pittsburgh Press, April 7, 1979 Congressional Inquiry Urged On Fires At Boarding Homes (A gasoline powered motor bike in the basement may also have contributed to the fire, the department said. (The state police fire marshal's report on the blaze is due to be filed next week, and department officials will then decide whether to file charges against the operator.) The house, operated by Helen Marietta, 54, was cited for a dozen safety violations by the state Department of Labor and Industry two years ago, but most of them were never corrected, said James Eady, a department spokesman. After the blaze, the state vowed to use all available manpower to inspect at least 420 special-occupancy boarding houses in various parts of the state. Both fires already were being investigated by state and local officials. In Connellsville, two elderly women who survived the Sunday night fire remained hospitalized.

Bessie Richter, 77, was listed in poor condition and Elizabeth Zamarelli, 74, was reported in critical condition. The fire broke out in an electrical fuse box in the converted house's basement, and sent thick smoke through the two-story structure. (77 Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry said yesterday that its investigation showed that the house had multiple plugs, too many extension cords, outmoded wiring and an overloaded use box. Ex-President Of Glassner Firm Dies Robert M. Glassner, retired president of the former Glassner Equipment was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack Thursday at Presbyterian-University Hospital.

Mr. Glassner, of 5832 Morrowfield Squirrel Hill, was a native Pitts-burgher and had retired as president of his firm two years ago. A pa-Jute of Canegie-Melk University's School of Engineering, he was member of the Tree of Life Congregation, Sqiirrel Hill, and was a member of its men's clib. He was also a member of Oakland Lodge S35 the Syria Temple, Pittsburgh Consistory, B'nai B'rith Israel Lodge, and the Zionist Organization of America. Surviving are his wife, Ida Sheer Glassner, a daughter, Mrs.

Louise Coben of Pittsburgh; a son, William of Philadelphia; and a sister, Mrs. Peggy Weisman of Pittsburgh. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the Burton Hirsch Chapel, 2704 Murray Squirrel Hill. Interment will be in the Tree of Life Memorial Park, Franklin Park Township.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. (ft I I llllj IJl WASHINGTON (UPI) A federal in-vestigator has recommended a congressional investigation of two fatal boarding house fires, including a blaze at Connellsville, that killed nine people. David Holton, chief investigator for the House Select Committee for the Aging, said "significant federal questions are involved" in the fires in foster homes for the elderly that took place in Connellsville and Farmington, where 25 died. Holton made the recommendation yesterday to Rep. Claude Pepper, D-Fla, chairman of the committee, who dispatched him to the Farmington site only boars after the tragedy occurred earlier this week.

Holton then proceeded to investigate the blaze in Connellsville. "I have completed preliminary investigations," Holton said. "I found significant federal questions are involved and have recommended full-scale bearings as soon as possible." Holton did not make details of his preliminary findings available. A committee source said they will be made public later. Holton said his purpose was to find whether federal funds were involved in operation of the homes or whether federal law or regulations were violated.
