C4 FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1996 NATION THE SALINA JOURNAL T CANCER RESEARCH Study is shelved after subjects die 'Beta carotene is no magic bullet,' declares cancer institute director By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Beta carotene supplements do not protect Americans against cancer or heart disease, and might actually increase smokers' risk of deadly lung tumors, the government declared Thursday. National Cancer Institute researchers shut down a vitamin study of 18,000 smokers last week, almost two years early, because too many of those being given high doses of beta carotene were dying. There were 28 percent more lung cancers and 17 percent more deaths among beta carotene takers than smokers who took dummy pills — almost mirroring a 1994 Finnish study that first raised questions about this carrot- derived vitamin's safety. A second U.S. study fed mega- doses of beta carotene to 22,000 doctors for 12 years and found no evidence of harm in either smokers or nonsmokers. But it also found that people who took beta carotene pills wasted their money. "Beta carotene is no magic bullet," concluded NCI Director Dr. Richard Klausner. "He does not make public appearances any longer," said spokeswoman Lynda Schuler, adding that he was "doing very well." Former first lady Nancy Reagan will be on hand, however. The celebration Feb. 6 will take place in the building that once housed the famed Chasen's restaurant, which will reopen for the occasion. Among those expected to participate: former President Ford and Colin Powell. Reagan announced his diagno- REAGAN sis in November 1994 in an emotional, handwritten letter. It was then, Schuler said, that Reagan decided not to make any more public appearances. "He still leads an active life ... but he made a decision that he will lead a private life," she said. But the doctors emphasized that doesn't mean people should avoid carrdts and other vitamin-packed vegetables and fruits. These studies merely prove that popping the pills can't replace the complex mix of natural chemicals — and the high-fiber, low-fat benefits — in those foods. Endeavour crew enjoys time off By The Associated Press CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — With the hard work behind them, space shuttle Endeavour's astronauts were given a half-day off Thursday. The shuttle is scheduled to return to Earth in a rare nighttime landing Saturday after a nine-day flight in which the astronauts made two spacewalks, scooped up a Japanese satellite and released and retrieved a NASA satellite. During the spacewalks, the crewmen tested tools and other equipment and thermal gear that will be used in building the international space station. MINNESOTA FATS Sharp-shooting pool wizard dies Wanderone's fortunes grew after Gleason's role in The Hustler' By The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Minnesota Fats, the pool shark who blustered his way out of smoky barrooms to become the most famous player ever to pick up a cue stick, died Thursday. Fats died of congestive heart failure, said his wife, Theresa Bell Wanderone, who already had his epitaph ready: "Beat everybody living on Earth. Now, St. Peter, rack 'em up." Various accounts listed Fats as anywhere from 82 to 95 years old. Born Rudolf Wanderone Jr., he was known as New York Fats early in his career. Jackie Gleason's character in the 1961 Paul Newman movie "The Hustler," based on Wanderone, was called Minnesota Fats.
