Pittsburgh Press, April 20, 1978 WPGH Sold roadcasfers Await FCC Nod, WYEP at Crossroads day from 9 a.m. to midnight, Wednesday is "International Day," featuring ethnic programs and the Pittsburgh Folk Festival. A "Blues Orgy" is set for Monday from 3 p.m. to midnight. April 30 is "Oldies Day." City, Kansas City, and Syracuse, N.Y.

Three are network affiliates, one is an independent; WPGH will be the company's first UHF independent. PITTSBURGH'S OTHER two UHF channels, 22 and 40, have been awaiting FCC decision on an ownership switch since last August. The Western Pennsylvania Christian Broadcasting holders of the Channel 22 permit, and the Commercial Radio Institute of Baltimore, holders of the Channel 40 permit, applied to switch channels. Pittsburgh Telecasting filed a challenge to that switch which will remain in effect, despite this week's sale of Channel S3. No decision has been reached by the FCC, and neither 22 nor 40 can go on the air without federal approval.

WAYNE VAN DINE joins KDKA's staff May 1, and his on-air duties will begin shortly thereafter. The six-month clause designed to keep him off the competition's air was nullified when WIIC chose not to make a counter offer. P. Maloney won the Channel 11 "Action Line" slot. responded to us, there's no point to it we can't remain a fledgling operation forever." The station is about to move its studio from Oakland to the South Side, and expects to increase its power and double its coverage area this summer.

Operating on a $137,000 annual budget now, the station has sought federal funding from Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) and city funding via a community development block grant. I Some $86,000 could be forthcoming from HEW's non-commercial broadcast facility expansion program. The funds will be used for new equipment and for a proposed training facility at Allegheny Community College on the North Side. HEW funds are granted on a 3-1 match: $3 in federal money for every $1 supplied by the station. WYEP's request to City Council totals $60,000, with an additional request for $20,000 in the 1979 City budget to defray costs on broadcasts of public hearings and other city events.

The station also has applied for support from the Program to Aid Citizen Enterprises. That allotment totals $71,000 allocated quarterly. LISTENER SUPPORT remains the bottom line for WYEP as a community station with a volunteer foundation. Membership contributions currently are running about $18,000 a month. A fourth anniversary "Dash for Cash" drive opens tomorrow and continues through April 30.

Program highlights of the fund-raising marathon include nightly performances by local amateur comedians, "Personal Passion" access time and a "Live Day" April 29 when all music heard on the station will be performed live. "The Music of Pittsburgh" airs Tues By BARBARA HOLSOPPLE Press TV Radio Editor The sands of local broadcasting are shifting again, as Channel 53 is sold and Channels 22 and 40 await FCC approval for ownership switches. And Pittsburgh's other TV stations applied this month for their three-year license renewals, with challenges to those renewals due in to the FCC by July 3. WPGH has been sold to the Meredith a Des Moines, Iowa, publishing firm and group broadcast owner. Tbe sale, reported at $12 million, is subject to FCC approval a process that will take at least six months.

Until that time, Pittsburgh Telecasting Inc. will continue to operate the station. General manager Al Holtz stresses that there will be no disruption of service. Meredith Corp. operates six radio and four TV stations in Phoenix, Bay station, WYEP-FM, begins its fifth year of operation this month in a make-or-break status.
