Pittsburgh Press, April 19, 1979 N.J. Copter Crash Kills 15 Injured NEWARK, N.J. (UPI) A New York Airways commuter helicopter crashed minutes after takeoff from Newark International Airport, killing three passengers and injuring 15, four critically. Among the injured was the Rev. Charles L.

Currie, president of Wheeling, W. College, who was en route to a reception for prospective students in Westbury, Long Island. He is in good condition after undergoing surgery for two broken legs. The half-full Sikorsky S-61L the same kind used by President Carter Retirement Unit Plugs Loopholes To Raise Funds HARRISBURG (UPI) The State Employees Retirement System is putting the final touches on legislation aimed at closing pension loopholes and saving enough money for a modest cost-living hike in state pensions. Richard Witmer, retirement system secretary, told the State Employees Retirement Board yesterday the legislation "would stop a lot of ripping off of the system and save us some money." "It's a tradeoff," Witmer told the board.

"We can save some money and offer part of it to the legislature to fund at least a modest cost-of-living increase for annuitants." Pennsylvania now counts 44,000 pensioned state employees in its $2.5 billion system, with the number of retirees rising rapidly. Witmer said the a actual amount of savings that could be realized by corrective legislation and applied to higher pension benefits "won't be known until our final meeting with Robert Smith, representing our actuarial firm of Huggins and ComPhiladelphia." party, Though 85 percent of the state's new retirees are withdrawing their own contributions, the proposed legislation is not expected to challenge the withdrawal privilege. The board yesterday authorized a state pension for former Supreme Court Justice Thomas J. Pomeroy Jr. of Pittsburgh, who retired after nine years of service.

Pomeroy, who left the bench last Nov. 19, withdrew $57,500 of his own retirement contributions, leaving the present value of his retirement account at $144,204. LATEST PREVIOUS DEATHS Azzarella, Margaret Barthelmes, Elizabeth McCrae (Bess) Beck, Charles F. Bittner, Harry P. Sr.

Poll apparently developed control problems three minutes after lift-off at 6:20 p.m. yesterday on a routine commuter flight to New York's LaGuardia Airport. "It was some kind of control malfunction, we believe," a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said last night.

A six-man team from the National Transportation Safety Board was sent to the scene to take over the investigation. The airline said it has suspended all operations in the New York area indefinitely pending the outcome of the investigation. Ironically, the craft's co-pilot and stewardess were aboard a previous New York Airways Sikorsky S-61L that flipped over while trying to land atop Manhattan's 59-story Pan Am building, killing five people with its spinning broken rotors. The dead in yesterday's crash were identified as Mary Stolarz, 63, a travel agent from Wallington, N.J.: Richard Dunbar of Illinois; and Cecilia Augusta, 75, of Newark, N.J. Although he lived in Illinois, Dunbar was a technical service representative for the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, a Pittsburgh firm.

"He was a 1949 graduate of Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie-Mellon University and was formerly employed in the MGD Graphic Systems Division of Rockwell International. Hospitalized in critical condition were pilot Leslie Carter, 55, of Rockville Centre, N.Y; co-pilot Lee Richmond, of Northport, N.Y.; Edward Stolarz, husband of the dead woman; and Richard Glover of Sherman Oaks, Calif. Shortly after the craft took off, officials said, the pilot radioed a "mayday" signal and tried to return, but the copter belly-flopped on a runway and rolled over. Deaths Elsewhere Neeta U. Kennedy beats President Carter by more than 2 to 1 in New Hampshire while Ronald Reagan runs better than 3 to 1 ahead of his nearest rival in that first-primary state, a new poll showed today. The poll of New Hampshire Democrats showed 48 percent favored Kennedy, the senator from neighboring Massachusetts, while 23 percent picked Carter.

California Gov. Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown was the choice of 12 percent. The poll was taken before the 41-yearold bachelor governor went to Africa with singer Linda Ronstadt. Since Kennedy has said repeatedly he would not challenge Carter for the nomination, pollsters David Moore and Robert Craig also asked voters their choice with Kennedy out of the race.

They found that Carter picked up more of the Kennedy vote than Brown did, giving the president a 43-27 lead over his likely rival. The pollsters called this a "substantial but not insurmountable lead." To strengthen his standing in the state whose primary he won in 1976 to launch his successful candidacy, Carter has scheduled a trip to New Hampshire next Wednesday. The poll of Republicans showed Reagan tied with former President Gerald R. Ford as the choice of 29 percent of the New Hampshire Republicans. With Ford out of the race since he has said he Collision Fatal To Carrick Man A 28-year-old Carrick man died at Mercy Hospital shortly after a two-vehicle collision on Brownsville Road in Carrick.

The four -p infant, known as "Baby Boy" Baker, was in critical but stable condition early today after being placed on support systems for a serious respiratory infection. West Penn spokesman Bill Chaney said if all goes as expected, the infant "hopefully will be off the support system in the next few days." The premature boy is the son of an Apollo couple.
