POLICE NAB 31 IN NORTH SIDE GAMBLING RAID Steel Barricade Ripped Down By Officers to Break Into 'Club' raided one of the North tr blSgest gambling houses early today, arresting 31 men and a short time later seized a complete opium smoking outfit in a downtown hotel, Jeit there, they said, by one ct the men caught in the raid. by Inspector Harvey Clayton Lieut. John Schnurr, a squad ot North Side officers gained entrance to the Flotilla Club, on the second floor at 323 Federal near the Fort Wayne Station, so sud-that they found a crap game still in progress.

Two Held For Court At a hearing before Magistrate P. J. Sullivan two of the men arrested Were rield for court on charges ot operating a gambling house and thej other 29 fined $5 each. Inspector Clayton testified that two "under cover" men gained entrance to tMe club operated by the same Interests which, operated at 118 Federal St. where a bandit gang staged a daring holdup recentlyand had gambled with marked aaoney.

Those held5 for trial gave their laames as George Dawson, 37, of 22 E. Lacock and Mike Haddock, 44. of 407 VvLacock St. Waiting outside in Federal the officers first seized the doorman before he could sound a buzzer alarm on the second floor ana then swarmed up the steps to find the surprised gamblers still around the crap table. While making the arrests, Lieut.

Schnurr saw a man who gave his name as Rod Cunningham. 26, of 120 Federal drop a key of a downtown hotel. He Immediately seized it and, going later to the hotel, found the opium outfit in a room which he said Cunningham, giving a New York City jaddress, had rented. Police jaid'they would hold Cunningham for investigation by Federal narcotic agents. Money Scooped Up Officers reported there appeared to be several hundred dollars in the dice game, but most of it was scooped up before they could confiscate it.

However, they took a steel door off its hinges, ripped out the buzzer, seized three sets of dice, five decks of cards and an apron for making change as evidence. A pool table, used as a crap table, was destroyed. In the room at the hotel Lieut. Schnurr said he confiscated an opium pipe, a lamp, one small container of opium, three empty containers, three packages of charcoal and a yen shee needle. Officers had been watching the club for some time on information that gambling was carried on there, but had experienced difficulty in gaining entrance because of the steel door and the buzzer alarm signal.

SIMPSON, DUKE TO MEET IN APRIL World-Renowned Lovers Talk Ove Long-Distance Phone By The United Press CANNES, France, Jan. 7 Mrs. Wallis Simpson and Edward.

Duke of Windsor, talked on the long-dis tance telephone today and made definite plans to see each other for the first time since their historic parting in England just prior to Edward's abdication for her love. The United Press learned on the most reliable authority that they plan now to meet at Monte Carlo rather than Cannes, feeling they can get away easier there from a curious world. The date will be late next April, after Mrs. Simpson's divorce decree nisi becomes effective. It was asserted that they made the April date and imposed three months of separation on themselves because both felt it was not wise to meet until the decree was made final.

Presi WAYNESBURG, Jan- 7 Such a good imagination has. Bill Taylor that he killed a real bird by pointing his finger like a gun, wiggling his thumb and shouting "Bang! Bang!" Taylor, former pitcher with, the Philadelphia Nationals, was swapping hunting stories with a bunch of the boys in a Main St. drug store. Restlessly he squirmed while the others boasted of their shooting prowess. At last he got the floor to tell about the time he doubled on grouse down in West Virginia.

To make the story more realistic, he threw up his arms as though handling a shotgun. "Bang! Bang!" he said as he knocked an imaginary bird off the South end of the soda fountain. He sighted again and brought down another bird perched on top of the cough syrup. Then he wheeled quickly and pointed at the front door. "Bang! Bang!" was a thump, as something fell to the floor.

Directly in the line of "fire" lay a sparrow dead. "What the hell" somebody said. The others merely gulped. Then they investigated. They decided the bird had flown into an electric wire over the doorway and broken its neck at the exact moment that Taylor "shot."
