Lovers of shad may soon expect to see market bountifully supplied with this fine species of the finny tribe. Caged at Last. For several months past, Henry J. Williams, colored, and his wife Mary Ann, have been engaged in keeping a kind of a sliced-watermelon establishment in close prox.

imity to the New Market house, at the upper end of Broad Street Of course it was often wondered at by the denizens in that neighborhood, how a saloon of that character could sup. port a family with the very limited trade it enjoyed, yet the proprietors seemed to live and enjoy life quite as well, if not better, than their more industrious neighbors. Of late, numerous burglaries have been committed in and around the vicinity of Fifetown and many families have been robbed of money and articles of value, but not until quite recently, was snspi" cion directed towards the sliced-watermelon sa-loonists. On Sunday night, Dec. 28th, the house of B.

W. Morris was entered and robbed of clothing to the amount of $100, or more, and Mr. Morris having sufficient cause to believe that his goods were in the possession of Williams and his wife, procured the necessary documents and with an officer proceeded to investigate. The goods were found in the possession of the sliced-watermelon saloonists with lots of property belonging to different families throughout the city, some of which had been stolen three years ago or more. The burglarious brace were introduced to His Honor Mayor Palmer, who committed them to the County Jail where suitable accommodations will be furnished until they take their compulsory departure for the State Penitentiary.

City Council. A regular meeting of the City Council was held on Monday night last, at which were present, His Honor Mayor Palmer and all the members of the Board. The minutes of last meeting having been read and approved, His Honor aunouueed the Board ready for business. F. C.

on nday, Jan. 2nd, 1874, James C. Simmons, eldest son of F. G. Simmons, Esq.

The deceased was a prominent and exemplary young man, who had but recently commenced Board for the payment of certain City vouchers amounting in the nggregate to the sum of $504.01, which had been issued to his client, and notified the Board that if payment was refused he should take legal action toward collecting the same at the next session of the Superior Court. Mr. Roberts stated to the Board, that his client was compelled to take this course from the fact that said vouchers would soon be barred by the statute of limitation. City vouchers to the amount of $30 in favor of Mr. W.

Fife was presented for renewal, which upon motion was ordered to be done. The Finance Committee, through its chairman Councilman Gray, submitted the following report Expenditures by the Board from May 1st to Dec. 1st. 1873: For Fire Department, SI, 772. 07 Police, 1,189.29 Mayor, Attorney and City Clerk 605.84 Cemeteries, 470.78 Streets, 433.30 Pumps and Wells, 2GG.1G Sundries, 270.55 Total, 5,007,99 Amount due on appropriations For Fire Department, 025.00 Rents, 339.88 The committee find that the tax col- lector has collected and turned over to the Treasurer in vouchers from taxes uncollected in 1872, Si, 191.

50 And there has been collected thus far for the year 1873 on tax For Current Expenses, SI, 379. 75 Mandamuses, 1,097.82 Old Vouchers, C79.43 Licenses, 1,252.09 Dogs, 134.00 Total 4,543.07 The Committee recommends that, bavins already issued vouchers and incurred liabilities to the amount which the law allows to be raised by taxation, and to avoid vexatious litigations, all salaries and expenditures be from this time until the first of May next, suspended, as we have no money to extend them. On motion, the Report was received and ordered to be filed by the Clerk. On motion of Councilman Gray, it was ordered that all moneys which have been received for the past year and which may hereafter be received for the sale of cemetery lots, be applied to the payment of balance due on ground purchased from E. R.

Stanly, until such balance shall have been paid. The annual Report of Chief Engineer of the Fire Department (which will be found in another column) was then read by His Honor, which was, on motion, accepted and ordered to be placed on file. On motion of Councilman Gray it was ordered that inasmuch as the Excelsior Bucket Axe Company, No. 4, did not now require the appropriation of $250 made by the Board at a former meeting, the same be reconsidered. Councilman Crawford moved that the Board petition to the Legislature for permission to raise by taxation an additional amount of $2,000 for the purpose of carrying on the ICity Government.

The motion being voted upon was lost Crawford, Nelson and James voting aye, and Gray, Guthrie, Campbell and McGe voting nay. On motion of Councilman Gray it was ordered that the City Tax Collector be commanded to collect the full tax and make returns within sixty days from Jan. 1st 1874, and that1 the Collector Bhall render to the Board at its next regular meeting, a list of delinquents for taxes and licenses.
