(UPI) - An old Oklahoma mining area that reaches into Kansas and Missouri Friday was declared the most dangerous site of hazardous wastes in the nation, worse even than New York's Love Canal. An Environmental Protection Agency report listed Tar Creek as having a "hazard ranking" of 78.97. By comparison, Love Canal was listed at 25th with a score of 60.%. j "It ranks as the most dangerous area in the nation," Rep. Bob Whittaker, R-Kan., said Friday before embarking with Rep. Mike Synar, D- Okla., on a tour of the Tar Creek area in northeastern Oklahoma. "There's a legitimate reason to be concerned. But the extent and the seriousness of the problem has yet to be determined," Synar said. "... It would be very premature to tell the people of Kansas or Oklahoma that there already exists any kind of health or environmental danger. That can only be determined through further study." Synar and Whittaker said the area, site of extensive mining by the Eagle- Picher company from the early 1900s until the mid 1960s, was labeled the nation's most hazardous waste site by an independent study conducted for a House oversight subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee by the Mitre Corp. The Tar Creek drainage basin, a 40- square-mile area lying mostly in the northeastern part of the Oklahoma, extends into Cherokee County in southeastern Kansas and could be contaminating drinking supplies there, officials said. The congressmen cautioned that officials don't yet know for sure if lead and zinc residues from abandoned mines in northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas have reached drinking water supplies. Officials said pollution from Tar Creek could also pose a threat to both surface and groundwater supplies in other surface waters such as Spring River and Elk Creek. Most communities in Oklahoma's Ottawa County, well over 10,000 people, get their drinking water from either the Boone or Roubidoux aquifer. A report by the EPA said "some localized contamination of the Roubidoux has occurred" from mining residues of lead, zinc and cadmium. "To our knowledge, that water is safe to drink," Synar said. "... But a very preliminary finding is that there has been a breakthrough to the Roubidoux." The entourage was to visit the Tar Creek area after visiting an abandoned oil refinery near Arkansas City, Kan.
