SAN FRANCISCO ILLINOIS AND INDIANA VISITED BY DISTURBANCE Chimneys Toppled Over in Some Places But No Great Damage Reported ST. LOUIS, Sept. 27. A slight earthquake which was felt through the southeastern part of Missouri and in southern and central Illinois and Indiana, occurred today. In St.

Louis the tremor came at 3:47 o'clock. So far as has been learned', little or no damage has resulted. The general direction of the shock was from east to west and it was felt more clearly in the thickly settled districts. Villages west of St. Louis reported the destruction of a few chimneys and in the west end of this city the residence district, many sleepers were awakened.

The quake was scarcely in evidence in downtown districts, only a few of the many guests in the larger hotels being disturbed. Reports of the phenomenon were received from all stations on the Mobile and Ohio railroad as far south as Cairo, 111. In Decatur, Mattoon and other towns in Central Illinois there were shocks at practicallyy the same time. A settlement of the earth's crust with the seat of the disturbance many miles distant is the generally accepted cause of the shock. The possibilities of a renewal of the shocks are negatived by local scientists.

The Olympic club which plays in Ueno on October 10th was defeated by Stanford University by the small score of 3 to 0.

Nevada University contented itself Saturday with a practice game between the lirst and second teams. It was a good hard game ana! became so exciting in the second half that-the time keepers forgot all about time letting the half go for fifty-five minutes. The regulation half is but forty minutes, but the Nevada men are in such excellent condition that the extra fifteen minutes made no impression upon their staying qualities. 116th teams were able to score several times showing that Nevada not only has a good first team, but a mighty good second team. From the two be picked a championship team that bids fair to defeat everything on the coast.

The Nevada Slogan "While more or less interest is being taken in these preliminary games, the great interest centers in the contest on Nov. 0 with California University. "Beat Berkeley or Bust" is the slogan that Coach Mayers has given the squad, and indications are that Nevada won't bust. Every player is in to win, all are observing training rules faithfully and.here is a higher standard of proficiency prevalent than the college has ever known 'rf-forc. In the game with the University of Pacific the gate receipts were a bit disappointing, amounting to but $107.25. It cost $300 to bring in the visiting team, and incidentals to the game totaled about forty dollars, leaving a deficit of nearly $200 to be made up by the students'. However, in view of the excellent showing made by the Nevada team, which has aroused an enormoi? amount of enthusiasm throughout the state, and in view of the excellent prospects of walloping al? the teams that come here this season, it is expected that the gate receipts will be much larger at all future games. Percy T. Moran, president of the California Wine Growers'- association, which comprises many of the most prominent winemakers in the'state, said to day that inasmuch as the new ruling of the international revenue conamls sion on the raisin wine tax was the third that had been made by that of ficial, and as a new date had been set each time for its enforcement, he pre ferred to await the developments of the next few days before entering into a discussion of the question. The same reticence was observed by, other prominent wine men in this city. "Can be depended upon" is an expression we all like to hear, and when it is used in connection with Chamberlain's Colic. The surprise of the rugby season what William Unmack, a San Francisco critic, writing in the Call has to say of the University of Nevada teanr that took the team from the University of Pacific into camp by a score of 43 to 0 the largest score yet made on the Pacific coast this year. Mr.

Unmack also concedes that the NeVada hacks anu' scrum are of the highest order. Here is what he sa3's in Sunday's paper: "The great surprise of the rugby world is- the University of Nevada team. Their decisive victory over the University of the Pacific lastf week stamps it as a team worthy of every consideration. Critics of them are unanimous in their opinion that the' sagebrush team will have to be reckoned with when they meet the University of California next month. The play of the backs is said to be the equal of anything seen in this vicnity.

They have the passing down to a scientific basis and the scrum is very strong in gaining possession of the ball." Fourth Week of Practice The Nevada team will enter upon its fourth week of practice tonight. Next Saturday it will play its second game with an outside team, the team from St. Mary's college of Oakland. The St. Mary's team achieved distinction last Wednesday by defeating the freshmen of the University of California by a score of 13 to 0.

However, tasted defeat on Saturday when the freshmen of Stanford University beat them by a acore of 23 to 0. Just what kind of a showing the Oaklanders will make in the game with Nevada remains to be seen. Nevada is picking up wonderfully, and the backs, Homer, Eossi, Folsom, Lonk-ey and Kennedy, have no equals on the coast. The wise ones say that next Saturday's ganie will simply be a question of how big a score Nevada will be able to run up in the short time allotted for play. Saturday'n Games i Several good games were played on the coast, on -Saturday afternoon.

The Barbarians, wIiq? will play Nevada on October 23, the day Mr. Ma okay is here, defeated the University of California by BOHEMIAN CLUB LAYS CORNERSTONE SAX FRANCISCO, September 26. a drizzling rain, clad in red dom-inces and each bearing a blazing torch, 400 members of the Bohemian club of this city marched through the streets early today, to lay the stone of their new $250,000 home, at Taylor and Post streets. The procession started from the temporary home of the club at Post end Leavenworth streets at midnight. The tolling of a bell, hidden in the ruins that surround the scene of the ceremony, was the signal for placing the stone.

The procession was preceded by a band and its weird appearance startled late downtown pedestr-ans into thinking a band of spirits was passing on the way to underground tombs. Members came from all parts of the country to participate in the celebration. THE ROAD TO SUCCESS has many obstructions, but none so desperate as poor health.
