20 5 VIRGINIA STREET. THE GOLDEN RULE trated ast Night. Two attempts were made last evening to burn the residence of H. Iligglns on Ralston street. A fire was started on the back fence at the premises but was discovered and extinguished before any great damage was done.

Shortly after another blaze was started some little distance to the south urd it was found that the fence had ben saturated with kerosene. Luckily, however, the fire was put out lefore it had gained any headway. Burglars attempted to gain an entrance to the residence of Peter Bur.te about midnight last night, but wera frightened away before they had accomplished "their purpose. The town is alive with hobos and it is a common occurrence to see citizens stopped on the streets and Importuned by this worthless gang for the price of a meal and if it is not handed them they at once become insulting and in other ways show their utter contempt for the laws. The ladles who are engaged in the different dry goods stores of the town complain that they are almost daily approached by these leaches and asked "to help a poor fellow to the price of a dinner," and if the money la not forthcoming they are deliberately insulted.

It seems that something should be done to rid the town of this undesirable element. The officers are doing everything in their power to se that the peace and quiet of the town is maintained, but they cannot be In a dozen places at one and the same time. As suggested in yesterday's "Gazette" extra policemen should be. put on and the citizens of the town given some assurance of safety. Theory That Bell's Attorney are Working On" In the Present Litigation. In an interview with Hon. Thomas Ford last, evening in regard to the mining suit of Wedekind vs. Bell that Is now occupying the attention of the District Court, Mr. Ford said, in substance: "It Is claimed by Bell's lawyers that Wedekind discovered mineral on section 33.
