"I'm not very excited about being 6-0," the rookie right-hander said last night after throwing a three-hitter to pace the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros. "I'll just try to go out and win my next ballgame. I'll try to stay on an even keel.

Coffman has 4,135 points and world record-holder Guido Kratschmer of West Germany is fourth, at 4,104. The only final on the first day, which was affected by a severe thunderstorm that held up the meet for nearly two hours, was in the pentathlon where Canada's Diane Jones Konihowski won with 4,640 points.

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) Lee Palles has a problem each time he competes in the decathlon against his good friend Bob Coffman. It seems Palles always is even with or slightly ahead of Coffman after the first five events of the grueling two-day test, only to see Coffman shoot ahead and out of sight before the competition is over. The first half of this script read true to form yesterday after the first day of the Liberty Bell Track and Field Classic. Palles, a 24-year-old accountant from Raleigh, N.C., held the lead going into today's final five events of the decathlon with 4,272 points.
