"It was a great team effort the offense, the defense, the kicking game." But he saved his highest praise for Mcintosh, his senior running back, who had missed two full games and most of a third with a severely pulled hamstring muscle. "If Joe is healthy, I know he can run like that," Reed said. "I also knew he was getting hungry (to play). We ran him some in practice, but not a whole lot "I wasn't sure he was 100 percent, but he didn't keep us wondering long." Mcintosh didn't start the game, and didn't make his first rushing attempt until there was 2:15 left in the first quarter. He lost 3 yards on that run, but was virtually unstoppable after that Georgia Tech coach Bill Curry praised Mcintosh, but credited the Wolfpack offensive line for opening the holes.

"Mcintosh is a great back; everyone knows that But he had some gaping holes to run through today' Curry said. "We certainly learned a painful lesson today about where we are as a team and how people will come to play against you as the underdog," he added. "They won the game in a physical fashion. They played smart football. They didn't commit any turnovers.

(Actually, State made one.) They outplayed our team. They beat us in all three phases of the game. They deserved to win. "I'm proud of our flurry there at the end, with our rally offense, but that just wasn't enough." State led 27-10 before the Jackets scored twice in the final three minutes on a 40-yard pass from John Dewberry to Ken Whisenhunt and Robert Lavette's second touchdown of the game, a 6-yard run. Tech failed on two two-point conversion tries.

N.C. State backup tailback Vince Evans had scores on short bursts of 2 yards and 1 yard and Mike Cofer added 35-yard and 22-yard field goals for the Wolfpack's other scores. Clemson quarterback Mike Eppley sparked his lifeless team to a fourth quarter rally with a 76-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Roulhac as the Tigers (3-2) struggled by the Tar Heels (1-3). Both the Tigers and the Tar Heels had lulled the crowd of about 80,000 to a stupor in the first three quarters. But Eppley lofted the ball just over the Tar Heels' Larry James, and Roulhac never broke stride on the way to a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the game. The score was 10-6, because both teams had traded field goals in the first half.

The Tide cut the halftime lead to 17-7 when freshman Vince Sutton scampered 32 yards on a quarterback draw to cap a 70-yard drive.

Alabama then opened the second half with an 80-yard drive that featured a 58-yard sprint to the 1 by Paul Ott Carruth, with Sutton scoring two plays later on a two-yard keeper around right end. The Tide, 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, then had possessions beginning at their own 44 and 49, at midfield and later at the Bulldogs' 44 after Georgia failed on a fourth-and-2 gamble, but they were never able to take advantage of the excellent field position. Georgia, 3-1 and 1-0, capped an 80-yard drive in the final quarter, scoring on Todd Williams' 31-yard pass to Herman Archie with 5:23 remaining. The victory gave Georgia a 46-5-1 record since the start of the 1980 season. Alabama is 0-2 in the SEC for the first time since 1956 two years before Paul (Bear) Bryant returned to his alma mater.

Carruth's 58-yard run came on the third play of the second half, with Jeff Sanchez making a diving tackle from behind to knock him out of bounds. When Sutton scored two plays later, the momentum had swung to the Tide. Alabama's defense stopped Georgia for a yard loss on the next possession and took over at the Tide 44 after the punt, but failed to move. The possession that started at mid-field was halted quickly when Sanchez intercepted a Sutton pass. Greg Richardson's 26-yard punt return started the possession at the Tide 49 and it eventually reached the 40 when Don Horstead got 6 yards on a fourth-and-5 fake punt, but Sutton was intercepted by John Little at the Georgia 15 on the next play.
