TeiM Fired manager Pat Carralev Sihugo Green, dead of cancer at 46, was one of the first great basketball players of modern times. Green came along when the game was changing drastically, when the development of the jump shot sped its tempo. The duty of the other three starters MATiMiiumc INSURANCE "Somebody took a short shot and Si went up and stuffed it back over his head." You didn't see that kind of thing very often in 1956. Rochester took Green in the first round of the NBA draft but, lacking an outside shot he was never more than a journeyman proalthough he played for 10 seasons with six different teams. Near the end of his career, in a reversal of his role at Duquesne, Green had the job of getting the ball to Bob Pettit Cliff Hagan and Clyde Lovellette, three prolific scorers for the St Louis Hawks. Green lived in Point Breeze. Survivors include his wife, Jane; son, Erich; and two brothers and three sisters in New York City.

With that first step, Green would get by the man who was guarding him and drive for the basket. "He was quick, he had fast hands and he was a great defensive player," said Manning.

Green played both inside and outside but was not noted as a playmaker. There was a reason for that, explained Manning. "Dudey had great talent, so he kept things uncomplicated." Almost every time the Dukes had the ball, they would clear the middle for Green or for Ricketts. Green's most unforgettable performance was against Dayton in his senior year. "Dayton put Bill Uhl on him," Manning recalled -Uhl was a 7-foot center "and I think Si had 42 points." He had 40, and 13 rebounds.

But what Manning remembered most vividly was an alley-oop play. On Saturday afternoon, Green was calling friends to "say so long," as be put it, and thank them for pleasant memories. Green was from Brooklyn. There were several accounts of how he happened to enroll at Duquesne. One story bad it that he was committed to St.

John's University but changed his mind when Frank McGuire, the coach there, moved to North Carolina. North Carolina recruited no' black players then. Green himself once said that his parents wanted bin to attend "a small Catholic college with a curfew." Dnqiene filled the bill and Green's high school coach was a close friend of Haskell Cohen, now pobliciry director of the NBA and a close friend of Dndey Moore, then the Doqaesne coach. Cohen brought Green and Moore together. Green was not tall, only 6-3, but his jumping ability was extraordinary.

BOB SMIZIK The undefeated Pitt Panthers.face their most difficult challenge of the season Saturday night when they play at Florida State, and they may have to go into the game without half of their starting defensive backfield. The 4-0 Panthers, who should jump from sixth to fourth in the country in this week's polls, came away from a 38-9 triumph over Maryland Saturday with cornerback Terry White and strong safety Carlton Williamson injured. Against Florida State, which stunned third-ranked Nebraska at Lincoln, that could prove to be a problem.

White is listed as very doubtful with a sprained right knee. Williamson is questionable with a sprained left foot. But despite the pessimistic reports from the doctors, Coach Jackie Sherrill is optimistic about the injuries. "Williamson will be ready," he said. As for White, who plays the vital left corner, Sherrill said, "There's no swelling.

It could be just a bruise. Terry's a quick healer." Junior Pappy Thomas, a two-year lettermaa, would start in White's place. Thomas played the last three quarters Saturday and, according to Sherrill, "played very well." There's no such experience behind Williamson. Sophomores Dan Short and Pat McQuaide are the backup strong safeties. The most experienced reserve strong safety is Butch Baierl, but he's coming off a finger injury and won't be ready.

Florida State's win over Nebraska and UCLA's win over Ohio State should enable Pitt to jump from sixth to fourth in the polls. Florida State, which was ranked ninth two weeks ago, could climb back into the top 10. Saturday's game, which starts at 7 p.m., will be televised locally by WTAE. Girl Golf Champion Injured Michele Berteotti of Upper St. Clair High School, the WPIAL girls golf champion, will be unable to defend her state title at Carlisle Friday and Saturday because of a leg injury suffered in an auto accident Saturday.
