Rallies present both sides of war issue (gazette Monday, December 17, 1990 Page PITTSBURGH (AP) Groups expressing different points of view on U.S. military involvement in the Persian Gulf demonstrated on Pittsburgh's streets and in front of the city government building. About 400 protesters marched Saturday from Point State Park to Market Square, according to police. An hour-long rally opposing U.S. presence in the Middle East followed.

"My fiance is but one of the men and women our president has chosen to deploy in the Persian Gulf in Saudi Arabia the 400,000 men and women considered to be expendable by our government," said Mary Noel-Woolard. "Why is our president so consistently intent on this destruction of human lives?" she asked. The march and rally were organized by several Pittsburgh civic and labor groups. In the portico of the City-County Building, the American Red Cross organized a rally that drew about 60 people. Speakers supported the deployment.

"It's a fact that you can only assure peace by preparing for war," said Lt. Col. Paul Rots of the 99th Army Reserve. But Elaine Smith, mother of Marine Lance Cpl. Scott Schmeltz, who also is stationed in Saudi Arabia, said she's beginning to doubt the need for U.S.

involvement in the Middle East. "In the beginning, my son and I both believed we were there for a reason. Now it's getting foggy," she said. "I don't want him there. I want him home with me."
