Pittsburgh Press, July 6, 1 980 J) 5 Home Runs Lead Typos To Tournament Title Meanwhile, Denny Welch held St. Paul at bay by scattering six hits and notching 10 strikeouts in a route-going performance. Pittsburgh broke open a tight 4-3 game by scoring two runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth Soto Tht Praia OCEAN CITY, Md. The Pittsburgh Typos won the 72nd annual Union Printers International Baseball Tournament, using their borne run bats to sweep a double-header yesterday, 6-4 over Detroit and 10-3 over St. Paul, Minn.

In the first game, the Typos got revenge after suffering their only loss of the double-elimination tournament, a 16-3 pasting by the Motor City squad. Brian Lucas threw a six-bitter in going the distance. He received offensive support from Hal Holland and Ed Santas to beat Detroit. Holland had two homers and a double and Santas added a home run to ignite the Typos' attack. Manager Paul Yoezle's team came right back to rout St.

We are trying to build a field in the Green Tree Capuano: His Boys Hurting By JOHNCLAYTON Ted Stepien made the Godfather the offer he couldn't refuse.

And the Godfather has refused many over the years. This is not an excerpt' from Chapter Four of a Mario Puzo novel. Instead, it is Chapter One of the Pittsburgh Champi-. ons, a first-year professional softball team battling for its life. The Godfather, for those ignorant of the local softball world, is Ange Capuano.

"Everybody calls me the Godfather of Pittsburgh softball," Capuano says. "Why? Because I've been involved so damn long, I guess." Why? Because he has spent so much damn money. Capuano has been around softball for 45 years, all but 20 years of his life. "I sponsored my team myself," he said proudly. "I never sold a raffle ticket either.

One year it cost me J24.000. That year we went to Jacksonville for the world championship." Most of his success came with the B.Y.M. Club, which maintained excellence throughout the 1960s and most of the 70s. Capuano owned the B.Y.M. Club, a large dinner club in Brookline, and sponsored a top amateur softball team.

Teams be has been involved with over the years have participated in 12 world tournaments. They have won IS regional tournaments. "I have sponsored teams that have won tournaments all over the country," Capoaio explains. "My teams have always been in the top 10 in the country in the amateur ranks. "The B.Y.M.

Club I had for 15 years. Our best showing was in 1968 when we finished second in the world. Worst hi- i'ack home-cooking job I've ever seen. I.Y.M. also finished fifth twice and third once." Stepien, a Cleveland advertising millionaire and a Schenley High grad, made an offer to the Godfather last fall.

"He had this professional league (the North American Softball League) and he wanted to have a franchise in the city he used to live in." the Godfather pointed out. "He called me up one day. The idea sounded great. "He said he would put up $75,000 for the franchise if 1 turned by B.Y.M. Club pro.

Every player would get 2,000 to area. Still, we are playing in New Ken sington now and drawing 400 fans. The other team is drawing only 40 or 50 'III 1 4 Days July 6, 7, 8, 9 people." "I never mention those guys Capuano says of the Hardhats.

"All I know is that our players get their check toe 15ti and SOU of the month." Nevertheless, not all of Capuano's B.Y.M. players followed him into the pro ranks. "They thought the travel would be too much," Godfather says. "The thoughts of a pro league have been discussed for years.

I've been in the game all my life and I know it. "About six years ago a guy called me up from Milwaukee and asked me about getting my team into a pro league. I told him it would never, never get off the ground. He was never going to get guys to quit their jobs to play softball for three months. "Well, they told me, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I told them I'm getting out of the kitchen right now." So what made him finally concede? "Ted Stepien is the only reason I'm involved," Capuano says. "Stepien made $75 million last year, arid he went to Schenley. He has been a good friend to softball over the years. Right now, three people locally want to buy a third of the club."
