18 Down here in the National Capital, it's the old reliable Gyp Battles along the ground and the sensational Sammy Baugh through the air ways, and this pair has the Washington Redskins travelling a wide open trail- to the Eastern Division championship in the National Football League. Congress may convene next month, but of greater importance is the fact that Battles and Baugh are in session now. They staged a little party here yesterday and came out of it with a 34-20 victory over the Pirates, their third triumph of the season. Battles ran for three touchdowns, one of 60 yards on a pass interception and two of 60 and 71 from scrimmage. When he had reeled off the last of these gallops he was permitted to go take his shower.

Baugh flung 16 passes and completed seven of them, but the damage was all done in two short tosses to Charlie Malone and Ed Justice. Both arched over the Pirate line into the end zone to hit the touchdown bell. The Pirates accomplished quite a lot on their own, but the three touchdowns they made and the SEND COUPONS TO Football Contest Editor, Box 476 THE PITTSBURGH. Blood Counts Twice Playing Coach Johnny Blood counted two of the touchdowns, one on a forward pass from Fiske, followed by a 15-yard run, and the other on a lateral from Karcis, with a four-yard gallop.

Tuffy Thompson gave the Bucs their other score with a run that was as beautiful as any of Battles'. The little halfback grabbed a pass from Blood and with a quick reverse of his field scampered 72 yards for the counter. Johnny Gildea heaved a long pass to Wilbur Sortet, who caught it on the Redskins 20 and raced over near the close of the first half, but Pittsburgh was called for off-side and the play went for naught. It was an important miscue, for instead of leading the Redskins 20-7, their margin was cut to 13-7. In first downs and yards gained, the battle was as near a standoff as was possible, but the Redskins made 34 points and the Pirates only 20.

The Tribe piled up 13 first Fifty five thousand persons who watched Pitt and Fordham in their scoreless tie Saturday, expected Dr. Jock Sutherland to send in a replacement for Harold Stebbins when it became evident that the curly-haired halfback had been seized with a severe attack of fumble-itis. Yet Stebbins played 59 minutes of the game, and yesterday Dr. Sutherland explained why. 'Curly' is a good halfback who was having, one of those bad days that come to all of us.

When he fumbled first, I didn't think he would do it again. But he repeated several times and every time he did made it that much surer he would stay in the lineup. I knew Stebbins felt worse than anyone else and I would rather have sacrificed the game than one small bit of the boy's pride," Dr. Sutherland said. "What wasn't known was that 'Curly' had been hurt two weeks ago and had had no drilling at all in ball handling in that time.

So perhaps it was my fault for using him at all. "But 'Curly' didn't lose the Fordham game for us and he'll College Standings DISTRICT CLASS A W. L. T. Pet.

TWO NEW sP oris Stew Served Hot By LESTER BIEDERMAN Little JERRY MATELAN, slightly forgotten in the general uproar of acclaim after Carnegie Tech's surprising 9-7 victory over Notre Dame at the Stadium Saturday, was a hero, nevertheless. He was the boy who first placed the Tartans deep in the game, when he caught that pass from MERLYN CONDIT and ran it down to the downs and a total of 300 yards in passes and running plays. The Pirates moved the sticks forward 12 times and totaled 303 yards in gains. Outpunt Redskins Gildea and Blood, who did the Pirate punting, averaged 47 yards for eight punts, against Baugh's 32.

But Baugh had something else, a pitching arm, that neither Gildea, Blood nor Max Fiske could match. The game was less than a minute old when Battles swiped a Pirate pass and ran It back 60 yards to score. It was a short flip by Smith to Davidson, who reached it just enough to tip the ball into Battles hands. The Gyp knew what to do then and he did it. Riley Smith converted the extra point, as he did three times later.

But his pay-off play came late in the contest with Tech leading, 9-7, but Notre Dame knocking, as always, at the touchdown door. It was Notre Dame's ball on Tech's 23. first down. The Irish suffered a two-vard loss on the first play.

Then they began to pass. Two passes fell incomplete. On last down, McCarthy faded back. Back he went until he finally found SKOGLUND, his left end, standing in the end zone, in the extreme corner of the field. He tossed the ball in his direction.

It looked mighty good, with SKOGLUND standing there waiting for the ball to fall when MATELAN raced across and just at the proper instant, batted it out of SKOGLUND hands!
