In a signed statement to police later Stillwater admitted he had obtained a wedding ring set, man's wedding ring and a woman's wrist watch and that he did not have any money in the bank on which he wrote the check, police said. The articles have been recovered. Stillwater was accompanied to the store by Pauline Barker, 22, of 1855 Elm street, Alameda, who also was arrested on the same charge.

She also made a statement to police which tallied with that made by Stillwater in respect to the trip to the store. Investigation so far has indicated that the woman's part in the affair may have been minor. Her story is that she met Stillwater at Grants Pass and that she came to Eugene with him on a bus at his invitation. Both statements said the pair had gone to a hotel here. Stillwater said he used the names, Mr.
