Kansos Cily Royals at Oakland. SPORTS DIGEST Baseball The Oakland Athletics, in their second big deal of the day, acquired outfielder Willie National League's second-leading the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night for outfielder Felix Jose and a pair of minor leaguers. McGee, 31, was batting .335 for the Cardinals. He was eligible for free agency at the end of the season and indicated he would not stay in St.

Louis. Ken Griffey was signed by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, joining Ken Jr. to become the first father-son combination to play on the same major league team. Last year, the Griffeys became the first father and son combination to play in the major leagues at the same time. Griffey, an 18-year major league veteran, was placed on waivers Friday by the Cincinnati Reds for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

He cleared waivers Wednesday morning, making him a free agent. Griffey said he wasn't ready to play Wednesday night, but Seattle manager Jim Lefebvre said he would put him in the lineup as soon as he feels comfortable. Cincinnati Reds manager Lou Piniella won't disclose how much the National League fined him for throwing a first-base bag into right field, but he says it is a notable amount. Piniella, who marked his 47th birthday Tuesday, received a letter that day from National League president Bill White informing Piniella of the fine for the incident during the Reds' 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 21.

Former Major League pitcher Larry Jackson has died after a long battle with cancer. His daughter, Becky, said Jackson, 59, died Tuesday night at a Boise, Idaho care center after an illness of about seven months. Jackson spent 18 years in professional baseball, including a 14-year major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. He had a 194-186 record.

Larry Parrish called it a career 25 games early. The 36-year old Parrish, who had 15 seasons in the majors before playing in Japan, told the Hanshin Tigers he is returning to the United States for treatment of a chronic knee injury. Basketball The Sacramento Kings have signed the first of their four 1990 first-round draft picks, rookie center Duane Causwell, to a two-year contract. Terms of the contract with the 7-foot, 240-pound former Temple basketball star were not released, but sources close to the club and Causwell said it is worth more than $1.3 million plus incentives. Causwell, the 18th pick in this year's NBA draft, is only the fourth NBA rookie signed so far this year.

Cycling The Soviet Union won its fifth gold medal at the World Cycling Championship Wednesday on a victory by its men's pursuit team, and the Netherlands, led by world pursuit champion Leontien van Moorsel, won the women's team tune trial. The United States men finished in seventh place in 1:59:18. The United States women's team of Inga Thompson, Eve Stephenson, Phyllis Hines and Maureen Manley took the silver medal in the women's race in 1:04.07. Football A former Oklahoma quarterback serving time for cocaine violations says guns and drug useage were common sights during his stay at the school's athletic dorm. Charles Thompson, in his soon-to-be released book "Down and Dirty: The Life and Crimes of Oklahoma Football," says coaches, including former head coach Barry Switzer, rarely checked rooms or exercised oversight in the dorms, and several players used or sold illegal drugs.

Thompson is serving a two-year federal prison term in Texas on a conviction of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Golf Australian Greg Norman's 1990 tour of the United States is winding down. That's why he needs a strong showing in the Greater Milwaukee Open to strengthen his lead atop the PGA money list. Norman, with two tour victories, isn't sure if he'll return for the lucrative Nabisco Championships in October. Norman captured the GMO title last year at the Tuckaway Country Club by three strokes with- a 19-under par 269.

The 1990 tournament begins today.
