Pittsburgh Press, Wed, uec irou Vvw On The Whole, Coryell Would Rather Play Philadelphia Even if he is nervous about facing the 10Vi sacks, have been plagued by groin have anything. This is an all-or-nothing Steelers, Coryell is one to love his enemy. "We feel a certain closeness to the Steelers," Coryell said. "They impressed us in the Pro Bowl as class people. And we know Noll as an assistant herp when I was at San Diego State.

"I just wish we were playing somebody else." problems. "I know it would be a different story for the Steelers if they didn't have bunches of them hurt," Coryell said. "They are really in bad shape when you lose one player, particularly when he is a catalyst like Jack Lambert. We know what happens to our club when we have a few injuries." "iilflfl' sage, But this is a different Steeler team trying to avenge last year's disaster. Injuries linger and the offense continues to struggle through a slump.

And unless the New Orleans Saints beat New England while no other American Conference team finishes with six losses, the Steelers will know before the game that they have no chance of making the playoffs and must adjust their thoughts. "If a guy is pushing himself with an injury, we won't play him," Steeler Coach Chuck Noll assured. "But we've got to get oarselves ready and go out and play with the pride of the Pittsburgh Steelers." That is what scares Coryell. He saw the pride of the Steelers last January when he coached in the Pro Bowl. "Nine of the Steelers that played in the Super Bowl reported for the Pro Bowl and practiced the next day," Coryell said.

'It was absolutely great. After winning in the Super Bowl, practice for the Pro Bowl game didn't mean much to them. Yet they didn't miss a practice." Beating the Steelers is essential if the Chargers wish to play in the Super Bowl. A Charger victory could earn them home-field advantage in the playoffs, but a loss could end their season. "If we win, we win all the marbles," Coryell pointed out.

"If we lose, we don't By JOHN CLAYTON Have the San Diego Chargers sounded retreat? Is their field general named Don Cor-yellow? The way San Diego Coach Don Coryell talks, the last thing he wants to do next Monday is play the Steelers. It doesn't matter that the Steelers might be playing for pride instead of playoff money. It doesn't matter that they have had a troubled season and their medical list includes every name on the roster. "Yon can tell I'm a little edgy," Coryell said. "I would rather play any of the other 27 teams around toe league than Pittsburgh.

I know this won't be an easy game. It will be one of the best games of the year. "I see those same names. I know how good they are." Maybe Coryell is trying to bluff the Steelers into a sense of security. Last year he praised the Steelers as the greatest team in football history and the most dominant group of warriors since thRomans ruled Europe.

The Chargers promptly deflated the Steelers, 35-7. 1'1've seen the film of that game, and wedidn't have the ball much in the first half," Coryell interrupted. "We didn't have the ball very much in the game. ThS made a lot of turnovers and we got the ball and made big plays." The Steelers made eight turnovers in game for us. San Diego's season has been as strange as the Chargers' position in the playoffs.

They may, in fact, have become victims of the strange tie-breaking system that regulates close races for the playoffs. Winning games within a division is the second tie-breaker. The Chargers opened the season with four American Conference West foes: Seattle, Oakland, Denver and Kansas City. After winning the first four, the Chargers have become an inconsistent 6-5 team. "We geared the whole pre-season toward our first four games," the Charger coach confessed.

"Maybe we could have been too prepared for those games." Injuries have weakened the Chargers. Starting strong safety Pete Shaw was lost for the season in November. Right tackle Russ Washington, a 288-pound mountain, damaged his knee and is spending the year on an island he bought. Center Bob Rush has been sidelined with an ulcer, running back John Cappelletti with a virus and running back Clarence Williams with a separated shoulder. Cornerback Mike Williams, who has been beaten for only one touchdown in his last 40 games, and defensive end Fred Dean, who leads the team with (XXi 4 DAYS: Wed.

The subject of Rogers and his 100-yard streak was one matter on which Sherrill was not so vague. "If you look at how many times he carries the football it has to be difficult to keep him from getting his 100 yards," he said. "If you gave Randy McMillan (Pitt's fullback) the ball 40 times a game it would be difficult to keep him from getting 100 yards." Most backs would choose not to carry the ball 40 times against the Pitt defense, which has done a number this year on the likes of Robert Alexander, Kerwin Bell, Curt Warner and Joe Morris. None is George Rogers, but none came close to 100 yards. Pitt may need help to prove it's the No.

1 team in the country, but George Rogers gives it the chance all by itself to restate the point that it is the No. 1 defense in the country. PITT NOTES Panther defensive tackle Greg Meisner was named to the Academic All-American team. Meisner, a three-year regular, has a 3.14 grade point average in pre-med West Virginia quarterback Oliver Luck was also named to the team. Luck has a 3.94 average in history.

Pitt leaves for Daytona Beach, about 100 miles south of Jacksonville where the Gator Bowl will be Elayed, tonight. The Panthers have not practiced since store their season finale with Penn State. Vince Dooley (the Georgia coach) should be Coach of the Year for what he's done." Carlen pointed out how Georgia needed a late fumble to beat his team, an even later nearly length-of-the field pass play to beat Florida and a field goal to beat Clemson. "I'd say the top three teams in the country are Florida State, Oklahoma and Pitt," he concluded. Sherrill wouldn't rate his team that high.

"We have to be one of the top five," understated Sherrill. "But we still have a game to play to prove it. As far as winning the national championship certain tilings have to happen. The national championship has to take care of itself. We can only take care of oar end.

"There's a lot of ifs. If Oklahoma beats Florida State, if Notre Dame beats Georgia and if we beat South Carolina." But the ifs notwithstanding, the chance to be No. 1 is a great motivational factor for Pitt. Senior-dominated teams playing in a minor bowl (such is the state of college football that $400,000 payoffs are minor) have been known to be less than enthusiastic when the time came to play the game. And since Georgia and Florida State play two days after Pitt, the motivation will still be there on Dec.

29. There's another factor involved which should spur Pitt. South Carolina's George Rogers, the Heisman Trophy winner, has run for 100 yards in 21 straight By BOB SMIZIK The subject of who's No. 1 not unexpectedly came up when Pitt called the media together for a final football luncheon of the season. On the telephone at yesterday's luncheon was Jim Carlen, the South Carolina coach, who has some definite thoughts on the matter, having played Georgia, which is No.

1, Southern California and Michigan. On the scene was Jackie Sherrill, who had some very vague thoughts on the matter. The difference was understandable. Pitt could be No. 1 come Jan.

2. South Carolina can't. Pitt is ranked No. 3, behind Georgia and Florida State and ahead of Oklahoma. South Carolina is 18th.

While the media feasted on steak, green beans, apple pie and egg nog, Carlen and Sherrill, whose teams meet in Jhe.Dec. 29 Gator Bowl, spoke. Carlen, who has gone on to considerably better things since leaving West Virginia, had the floor first 1'Pitt," he said, "is as talented as any team in the coantry. They are one of the top three in the country and as good as the other two." You had to figure that the top three Carlen was talking about were Georgia, Florida State and Pitt But yott soon learned otherwise. "Pitt is a better football team than Georgia," he said.

As for Greenberg, he's almost always on the road looking for new talent to replace the five seniors Pitt loses after this season.

As for the team, it took two days off after the Satarday night loss and reported back to practice yesterday. That may seem like a strange way to cure a team's problems, but the players were in the midst of finals and Chipman also thought it might be a good idea to get them away from the game. One of the things that Warford picked up in looking at game films was that Carlton Neverson, the team's leading scorer through the first five games, has lost confidence in his shooting ability. Small wonder! After hitting on 58 percent of bis shots (19-33) in Pitt's opening wins over St. Francis and St Bonaventure, Neverson has hit a frigid streak.

He has been a 34 percent shooter (23-68) in the last four games. He was one-for-seven in the first half against Alabama-Birmingham and by bis By BOB SMIZIK It is, they are finding out in the Pitt basketball office, not going to be so easy. It is, they are finding out, going to be extremely difficult to move the Pitt basketball program up among the elite of the nation. Lofty goals have given way to hard facts. Though the season is only six games old, Coach Roy Chipman is finding he's a long way from reaching the goals he's seeking.

1 The Panthers 12-point loss to Alabama-Birmingham Satirday aight, wnkh dropped their record to 3-3, only served to expose more flaws. When they meet Virginia Tech Friday more warts may be seen. to remedy the situation, Chipman and his; staff have gone off in different directions. Assistant coach Reggie Warford poured over video tapes of the Alabama-Birmingham game and found some things that might be useful Chipman and assistant coach Seth Greenberg hit the recruiting trails. It I shots in the second half, two of which he made.

"He's got to learn that he has to keep moving and keep working for his shots, said Warford. Too often, Vaughn just stood in the corner and waited for the ball to come to him. Since Pitt has shot a horrendous 41 percent in its last four games, after making 52 percent in the first two, it is almost certain to see nothing bat zone defenses in the games to come. And where the outside shooting needed to beat a zone will come from remains unclear. Vaughn will have to provide some of it and Pitt may have to find ways to get the ball to Dwayne Wallace, who is the only regular to have made more than 50 percent of his shots (15-29) in the last four games.

But there are no easy answers for this basketball team as Roy Chipman is quickly learning. PITT NOTES The student judiciary hearing scheduled for tomorrow for Len-nie McMillian and Eddie Wallace, who were suspened indefinitely Dec. 9, then reinstated three days later, has been postponed until early next month. Both players will make the trip to Virginia. Their status will be re-examined after the hearing.

BOWLING BAGS I 25 off! Save on tvery bag in stock! ---------I I I own admission stopped shooting in the second half. "He had shots and he wasn't taking them," said Warford. Chipman had stronger things to say. "I think his shooting slump is affecting his entire game," he said. "He has to do the things he can do rebound, play defense and give us leadership.

"He's not doing those things right now." Another thing Warford discovered was that freshman Clyde Vaughn, Pitt's best shooter, wasnt working hard enough for his shots. After making four of six shots in the first half, as the Panthers took a four-point lead, Vaughn, on a team in desperate need of a hot hand, took only three Kush To Coach Tiger-Cats MEI'S AMD WOMEN'S I HIGH-CUT 1 Rink Roller Skates BOWLING SHOES I "GURE SKATES ICUIlt -41 M-J IIC CI U-99 1. "We had a 12th man on the field, but we call him the referee," he joked. Kush was a legend at Arizona State, where he produced a number of nationally ranked teams during a 22-year career. He was the second-most successful active coach when he was fired in October, 1979, with his teams registering a cumulative 176-54-1 record. His firing stemmed from charges he hit punter Kevin Rutledge during a game the previous year, then attempted to cover up the incident.
