So General Manager Bobby Beathard made the off-season's boldest move, grabbing linebacker Wilber Marshall of the Bears in just the second free-agent signing in a decade- Marshall will certainly help a defense that also features end Charles Mann and cornerback Darreli Green and emerging stars like cornerback Barry Wilburn and strong safety Alvin Walton. But the offense isn't nearly as sound. The receivers Gary Clark, Art Monk and Ricky Sanders are first-rate and the offensive line remains Hog-solid.

But the backfield is a question. Williams and his weak knees will start the season. But the 33-year-old quarterback hasn't played a full NFL season since 1983 and Schroeder is a question mark behind him. Schroeder's shoulder seems to have recovered during the off-season, but has his attitude? Third-stringer Mark Rypien, while promising, has no NFL experience. George Rogers is gone at running back and Timmy Smith, who gained 204 yards in the Super Bowl, is now the full-timer, augmented by Keith Griffin, pass-receiving specialist Kelvin Bryant and a cast of rookies like Jamie Morris and Mike Oliphant.

But nobody's sure Smith's a full-timer. "Really, the fun goes away fast," Beathard says. "You have more worries than time to celebrate. As soon as it's over, it's next season." The Giants found that out last year, something Parcells now acknowledges. But they were so bad, 6-6 with the regulars, 0-3 with strike replacements, that they get a soft last-place schedule Detroit twice, Kansas City and the New York Jets among others.

The defense remains solid. And some emerging young players may make it better along with a fired-up Lawrence Taylor, who seems to play Superman every other year.
