INDIANA vid Downham, 9, LongfeUow McClure After readings in the 90s earlier in the week, Indiana's temperatures took a nose dive early today, setting a record at Evansville and a record was tied at Indianapolis.

But the cooler temperatures will not last long. The National Weather Service predicts readings in the 90s by Monday. Evansville's reading of 48 degrees this morning bettered the previous record of SO set in 1913. At Indianapolis, the mercury dipped to 44, which tied the record for the date set in 1913 and 1980. South Bend's reading of 41 degrees was not a record.

Midwest, Northeast shiver; Storms plague South A high-pressure system caused the mercury to plunge in parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest today, while fierce winds ripped off roofs, downed power lines and toppled a 75-foot-tall pine tree in the South. Frost and freeze warnings were posted this morning from southern New York into Pennsylvania's northern mountains. Frost and freeze advisories covered parts of central and northeast Wisconsin and northern Michigan. Meanwhile, thunderstorms drenched parts of the Southeast.

The storms extended from eastern North Carolina through much of South Carolina into the central Gulf Coast region. In Georgia, strong winds ripped a roof off a house and a barn Thursday night In Bullard, while trees and power lines were downed in parts of Macon, Irwinton and Toomesboro. The storm system brought rain to some drought-stricken areas, along with crop-damaging hail. "It was not a lot of rain, but every little bit helps," said Joe M. Peliffier, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at North Carolina's Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Jessica will go into the ring Saturday with fund-raiser organizer Bonnie Arnold on behalf of the youngster, Brennan Bolin. "At the beginning of the event for fun he (Von Erich) will be tumbling around with Jessica," Mrs. Arnold said Thursday.

"We're not going to let him hurt her, or her hurt him either. It's a fun bout." Brennan needs $125,000 for his operation, said Mrs. Arnold. The fund drive so far has raised about $55,000. The Bolins and the McClures are acquaintances, said Mrs.

Helmsley fighting decorator over $50,000 advance NEW YORK (AP) Leona Helmsley, already facing federal and state tax evasion charges, is now on the rocks with an interior decorator who allegedly ignored her wishes for outfitting one of her homes. The decorator, Rita Silbert Davis of El Paso, Texas, has refused to return a $50,000 advance on the Paradise Valley, home, court papers filed by Mrs. Helmsley alleged Thursday. Mrs.

Helmsley, the self-proclaimed "queen" of the hotel chain run by her husband, New York real estate magnate Harry Helmsley, has requested that Ms. Davis use Mexican volcanic stone inside the house, among other things. recommendations did not reflect the concept for the house previously agreed upon with Helmsley," the court papers charge. Ms. Davis was fired March 31.

Mrs. Helmsley, one of the world's wealthiest women, seeks the return of her $50,000 with interest. Willis resting comfortably after appendix operation LOS ANGELES (AP)Entertainer Bruce Willis was "at home, resting comfortably" five days after doctors removed his appendix, a spokeswoman said. He's doing great," she said. After about 10 days at home, Willis is expected to go back to work promoting his upcoming movie, "Die Hard." Willis, one of the zany detectives on ABC's "Moonlighting" television series, experienced pain Saturday night and was taken to the hospital, where appendicitis was diagnosed and surgery was performed later that night. Chase says Belushi's drug use strained friendship NEW YORK (AP) Chevy Chase says his relationship with fellow "Saturday Night Live" actor John Belushi was strained because Belushi's drug use had turned him into "kind of a dork." Chase said he was not suprised when Belushi died of a cocaine overdose in March 1982, because 'I knew John could go over the line." "In fact, that was the very reason I hadn't seen much of John in the last two or three Chase said in an interview in the June issue of US magazine. "Frankly, he had become kind of a dork. Spending time with him had become difficult and unpleasant." As for his own addiction to prescription Newman WUlis Chase painkillers for back pain, Chase said he Knew after his second day at the Betty Ford Clinic that he'd never take another pill, mainly to avoid returning there.

Attorneys for both sides refused to disclose the terms of the settlement, as did the 16-year-old singer, who has scored hits with remakes of '60s era songs such as "I Saw Him Standing There" and "I Think We're Alone Now." Tiffany filed emancipation papers in March after Williams refused to approve a management contract between the singer and George Tobin, her manager.
