My friend (I'll call her married a nice guy in 1978.

He's a sales rep and on the road most of the time. Krista and Cal had a son five years ago. A nice family unit. About a month after Junior was born, Cal gave Krista a purebred beagle. She went crazy about the dog and treated him better than the baby.

When Junior was old enough to crawl, he began to puil the dog's tail and hit him when he thought nobody was looking. A couple months ago. Junior began urinating in unexpected and inappropriate places. First. into his mother's shoe.

then in her purse, next her jewel box. After he was punished for ruining the jewel box he found some scissors and cut his mother's string of pearls. At first Krista attributed the urinating to Junior's laziness. I told her if it were laziness, he would just wet his pants and not seek special- places.Last Christmas Day it snowed heavily. I called Krista to chat.

She sounded breathless. I asked her what she had been doing. "I've been playing outside in the snow with the was her reply. I asked where Junior was. She replied, "Upstairs, watching television, I guess." What do you see here, Ann? Krista and Junior had better get to a family therapist before we read about them in another part of the paper. Dear Ann Landers: The. recent letter from "Guilty in N.Y.," whose wife died of emphysema, caught my eye. Please tell that man not to feel guilty. I'm sure had he known that his cigarette smoke was killing his wife he would have stopped smoking in her presence.

I teach smoking cessation classes and have done a great deal of research on this subject. Ignorance is the culprit. Once smokers understand the facts they behave differently. Here is some information that every nicotine addict needs to know: Nonsmoking spouses of heavy smokers develop lung cancer at nearly twice the rate of those married to nonsmokers. Nonsmokers marriea to smok- Brain Development Needs Nutrition How much does a child's brain development depend on what the child eats? Just as our muscles and other body organs need proper nourishment to grow, so, too, does the human brain.

The brain's development and its dependence on proper nutrition begins even before we're born. From the early months of pregnancy through about of age, the child's brain grows, and good nutrition can be critical. Studies have shown that children who are malnourished during periods of brain development inay have stunted brain growth. Sometimes you can, in a sense. see this because the child's head circumference will be much smaller than average.

This poor brain growth can actually begin during pregnancy. so pregnant women need to be particularly careful to take in enouch folacin. protein, iron and zinc. Most of the physicians caring for pregnant women can advise their patients as to which vitamin and mineral supplements they might need. It's especially important for women who are vegetarians or on low-meat diets to consult with their doctors to be sure their unborn Heloise baby can get the nutrients needed to sustain proper brain growth.

Incidentally, it's not just vitamin deficiencies that can have a bad effect on brain growth vitamin excess can do it, also. Too much vitamin in particular. during pregnancy can harm an unborn child's developing brain. After birth, too, the child needs things we might not realize, like cholesterol and fats, if his or her brain is to grow Ann Landers Health Drs. Lester L.

Coleman Steven Andrew Davis children are related to the ingestion of plants. This simple statement emphasizes the potential hazards and the need for families to protect themselves from these dangers. The American Association of Poison Control Centers distributes a vast amount of literature in their educational campaigns. They point out that children, with their natural curiosity for lasting virtually anything, will eat the leaves of some plants. The result is that inflammation, irritation and blistering occur on the tongue, mouth and gums.

In addition, nausea, vomiting and cramps may accompany the ingestion of these plants. Families are warned and asked to be aware of this common type of poisoning and to pay specific attention to the frequency with which this occurs in children Ask anyone who has tried our Supreme Broasted Chicken and they'll tell you its Delicious. A recent U.S. study calculates that 10,000 to 50,000 American nonsmokers die each year due to long-term exposure to low levels of hand smoke. We now have the solid documentation. No more guessing.

Please, Ann, give the American public the facts. A FORMER SMOKER DEAR FORMER: That's precisely what I've been doing ever since the embattled American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute started to sound their warnings. And I intend to keep at it. Cigarettes are not the only killers. Chewing tobacco has been targeted as a serious threat because it can cause cancer of the tongue and mouth.

1 wish our baseball heroes would stop chewing and spitting on TV. These role models for America's youth set a very poor example, and some of them are going to break our hearts by dying much too young. below the age of 6. Children are particularly tempted to chew the bright red and orange berries of many plants. The attractive bulbs of springtime flowering plants such as hyacinth and daffodils can cause distressing abdominal symptoms.

It is essential therefore when purchasing plants that inquiry be made about the potential possibilities of toxicity. Drs. Coleman and Davis welcome questions from readers, but regret. that they cannot answer letters individually. Please write to them in care of this newspaper.

11am-12am 7am-12am Sun. 7am-5pm Plants add to the loveliness of the home. Most plants carry no special toxic effects for children or for adults. Consequently, it is just taken for granted that plants that flourish within the safety of the home are not injurious. Yet, it is estimated that almost 10 percent of all poisonings reported in Leather Furniture Needs Special Care DEAR HELOISE: I recently purchased a leather couch.

I was a little nervous about taking care of it properly, but I learned quickly. Dust and vacuum it often. Don't ever soak it with water. For emergency clean-up, use a mild liquid dishwashing liquid put a few drops in a gallon of warm water. Wet a soft wash cinth and wring it until it is just slightly damp.

then rub the spot lightly. Leather is like wood it needs to be oiled occasionally or it may dry out. To prevent it from cracking and becoming brittle, use saddle soap or an oil specifically made for top-grain leather. I was told that if i follow these directions, I'll have iny couch for a long. long time.
