Ashury Park Press Thursday, March 14, 1996 D7 U.S. swimming may be lucky to keep its head above water Mainland stripped of title THIS WON'T be Summer Sanders' time to star in the Olympic Games. Sanders, a swimming great, will be there as a member ol the NBC television team. Such members of past Olympic teams as Tom Jager, Mel Stewart, Ron Karnaugh, Anita Nail and Crissy Ahmann-Leighton were unable to 7 By ELLIOTT DENMAN STAFF WRITER TROUBLE LURKS in the international waters. The United States has just completed picking men's and women's Olympic swimming teams.

They're very good, but they'll face a world that's getting better. "This is a very exciting team," U.S. men's Olympic coach Skip Ken-ney of Stanford University said on the final day of the Olympic Trials this week in Indianapolis. But he couldn't guarantee that his men's team even with Tom Dolan, Gary Hall Kurt Grote and John Piersma, all set for multiple duty would be a dominating one. U.S.

women's coach Richard Quick, also of Stanford, said, "I don't know of any way we can stretch anything to where we're favored for a gold medal in any event." Quick's women's team has veterans Janet Evans and Angel Martino, post-collegians Amy VanDyken and Whitney Hedgepeth, high schoolers Critina Teuscher and Brooke Bennett and 14-year-olds Amanda Beard, Beth Botsford and Jilen Siroky. Twenty women were named to the team, to handle both individual races and relays. Ten are teen-agers. The 24-member men's team will have just one teen-ager, 19-year-old Michigan freshman butterflyer Tom Mal-chow. In seven days at the Trials, not one world or United States record was set, and that's something that hasn't happened since 1920.

But the Trials were held 4'2 months before the Games, and the timing wasn't right for peak performances. Pessimists say that the Chinese swimmers, especially the women, may be overwhelming; that the Australians are beginning to resemble the Aussies of old; that the Russian SCHOLASTIC suspension. The day before the title game, lawyers for Cairns asked a Superior Court judge to issue an injunction clearing the way for him to play. Judge George Seltzer refused, prompting the lawyers to take their case to the Appellate Division. The only judge available, Appellate Judge Michael P.

King, was attending a wedding reception at Atlantic City Country Club. So he held a hearing in the country club lobby and ruled that Cairns could play because he had not been afforded the right to an appeal. Boyd Sands, executive director of the New Jersey State Interscholastic there. No teams have worked harder for this moment," said Sourlis. "This was our goal all year long," said Toole.

"When you're a senior like I am, and you get an opportunity like this, you just want to keep play-ing. This time, there was no deception. It was the truth. Joe Adelizzi is a columnist for the Asbury Park Press. third.

After 11 minutes of back and forth, Cogan scored the winning goal, which strangely resembled the one scored by Warren Wolf Jr. when Brick won its first state title with an overtime triumph over Chatham in 1976. "This feels great," said Dragons coach Bob Aurienjma. "It feels as good as it did the first time. Everyone has worked very hard to get to this point." Brick got off to a fast start.

Acropolis slapped a clear shot from the point past Chatham goalie Dean Jan-kovic at 5:53 into the first period to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Cogan followed two minutes later with a spinning shot in front of the Chatham net to put the Dragons up 2-0. The Cougars' Cohen answered with the first of his three goals with 5:39 remaining in the period. Brick goalie Jake Kahl finished with 23 saves, including a few nice stops in the second period. span in the first to tie the score at 2-2.

CBA ended the high-scoring first period with the advantage after a Dan Novellano goal with 34 seconds remaining in the period. The Colts held the Pirates to only one shot on goal in the second period, but couldn't score one of their own which made Henkel's third-period score so important. "I told the team in between that I was going to step it up for us," said THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LINWOOD Mainland Regional, which won the New Jersey State In-terscholastic Athletic Association South Jersey Group III football state championship 42-14 over Woodrow Wilson on Dec. 9, has been stripped of its title "for using an ineligible player. The Mustangs did so with linebacker Jason Cairns on the field.

Cairns had been ejected from the team's previous game after a referee said he threw a punch. Cairns denied it. Under state rules, a player ejected from a game must serve a one-game Rumson From page D8 we're the better team," said Toole. Sourlis wasn't getting drawn into any of that. "I guess it's good to know that one of us will be playing in the Mead-owlands in the tournament final," said Sourlis.

"It's not an accident that we're both Brick From page D8 in the second period. But the Dragons' defense tightened thereafter and things started to happen. Brick tied the score at 2-2 at 9:15 in the second as sophomore defense-man Steve Acropolis fired a shot from the blue line that deflected high in the air and down to the waiting stick of Cogan standing at the corner of the Cougar net. Brick took the lead on another break with 3:06 remaining in the second. Acropolis blasted an open shot that bounced off the skate of Cougar defenseman Peter Dunn and into the Chatham net.

"I was just trying to get the puck into the zone," said Acropolis. "You've got to shoot it in when you get a chance like that. Anything can happen." Chatham tied it up again at 4-4 as Fred Gero scored at 1:33 into the Colts From page D8 NJSIAA Parochial playoffs with a 10-10 record and made it to the finals with upsets over St. JoSeph's-Metu-chen and St. Joseph's-Montvale.

But the Pirates came right back. Zack Hatcher and Justin Liebman scored consecutive goals in a 1:32 qualify tor the Atlanta team. However, Sanders' failure to Set to the ames was the most poignant. 10 ATLANTA Sanders, 23, a Stanford graduate, won four medals, Including gelds in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-medley relay, at the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. But, on the final day of the Trials, Sanders finished last in the 200 butterfly, a race won by 21 -year-old Annette Salmeen, with 19-year-old Trina Jackson second.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed because you dont like your last race to be eighth place, but I'm looking beyond that," Sanders said. "I have a new appreciation for swimming. Honestly, I guess it makes me appreciate when I was on top of the game and when I was swimming really well." Elliott Denman other training cycle that allows us an opportunity to get better. "I think it's going to make a difference that the meet's in our country. The coaching staff needs to talk about that talk about the pride in representing your country in the United States." Three women Martino, Teuscher and VanDyken are booked to compete in three events, plus a freestyle relay, with the medley relay a possible fifth event.

Four men, Dolan, Hall Piersma and Josh Davis, compete in three events, with the medley relay an optional extra. Lopez recovering from broken jaw STAFF WRITER FORMER UNITED States Boxing Association welterweight champion Sizzlin' Sal Lopez was forced to spend a second evening in a Philadelphia hospital last night as he recovers from a career-threatening broken jaw suffered in the ring Tuesday night. Lopez, who lives in Perth Amboy and trains in Howell Township, had his jaw wired shut early yesterday and was scheduled for surgery later in the day at Hahnemann Hospital. Lopez was to leave the hospital today, according to his manager, Bob Van Syckle. Lopez will be out of action for at least six months.

The NJS1AA has since notified the" school that the title has been taken away, according to Mainland athletic director George Evinski. Wilson will not get the title, the NJSIAA has decided.

It will remain vacant. Mainland principal Judith Carew and head coach Bob Coffey both de- clined comment on the ruling yester day. Quick said, "We can improve a great deal in Atlanta and hopefully respond to the challenge that the rest of the world provides." The Trials are "like the Super Bowl or NBA Finals," he said.

"A lot of times that pressure causes a diminishing performance. There will be plenty of pressure (in Atlanta), too. We've got to learn from here and go on." Jones, the IBF super middleweight champion, has signed to play for the Jacksonville Barracudas of the U.S. Basketball League. Jones, 5 feet 11, "is a great athlete with a champion's heart," said Artis Gilmore, the team president and former star center. Jones, 27, will play during the 1996 USBL season. The 26-game regular season runs from May 10 to June 30, followed by a week of playoffs.

Jones, who lives in Pensacola, said, "My playing basketball is consistent with the aerobic part of my training." Jones is 31-0 with 27 knockouts. BOXING: Former heavyweight champion James "Buster" Douglas will return to boxing this spring, a close associate said. Shelly Wood, described as Douglas' personal assistant, confirmed that Douglas will meet Tony LaRosa of Chicago May 18 in Miami as part of an undercard before the Hector Camacho-Roberto Duran fight. RED BANK Disney ducks out BASEBALL: The Walt Disney Co. yesterday abandoned plans to buy the California Angels after the company couldn't reach an agreement with Anaheim to renovate the team's ballpark. "It's not going to happen. This deal is over," said Tony Tavares, president of Disney Sports Enterprises Inc. "We happened to think we put a deal before them.

Apparently they didn't." On Jan. 18, baseball owners approved Disney's deal to buy 25 percent of the Angels from Gene Autry. Dis-ney would have operated the team and had the right to buy the remainder of the Angels after Autry's death. Disney chief executive officer Michael Eisner said then that the com- pany wouldn't close on the deal unless it reached an agreement I with Anaheim by March 17 on plan to renovate Anaheim Stadium Mark McGwire spent several hours on a trainer's table before grabbing his crutches and announcing: "No change, no miracles." The Oakland Athletics slugger, who hurt his right foot Tuesday in an exhibition game, will fly to the San Francisco area today for an examination by team orthopedist Jerrald Goldman. PRO FOOTBALL: A redesign and poor weather have delayed the completion date of Giants Stadium's expansion until the 1998 National Football League season, officials said.

The New I Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, operator of the sta- dium, had planned to add 26 luxury boxes, six super suites and 800 club seats before the 1997 season. But authority president Robert Mulcahy said the demand for additional suites exceeded the demand for club seats. The redesign calls for an additional 14 terrace suites and just 120 club seats, Mulcahy said The New England Patriots made their first big moves of the offseason, signing free agents Shawn Jef- ferson, 27, a speedy receiver who played for the San Diego Chargers, and Willie Clay, 25, a safety from the Detroit Lions. Free agent safety Dana Hall, a former first-round draft choice, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Green Bay Packers won't match the Miami Dolphins' offer to wide receiver and kick returner Charles Jordan, general manager Ron Wolf said.
