Diocesan Artist, Ex-Teacher Dies Sister 1 M. Hilda Giegerich, chairfor 43 years of the art department of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, died yesterday in Mercy Hospital. For 65 years, she was a Sister of Mercy in Pittsburgh. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy, St. Xavier Academy in Latrobe and Duquesne University and Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie-Mellon Universty.

She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree and did graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame. She entered the Pittsburgh Sisters of Mercy 1916 and taught art at St. Regis School, St. Paul Cathedral grade and high schools and St. Xavier Academy before joining the Our Lady of Mercy Academy faculty.

For over 25 years she conducted Saturday and summer classes at Mount Mercy College for art teachers. Sister Hilda was appointed diocesan art director in 1945 and was later art curriculum director for the diocese. She received many awards for her art work and was a member and exhibitor of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Water Color Society, Craftsman's Guild of Pittsburgh and the Craftsman's Guild of Pennsylvania. Until her retirement in 1972, she had been a member of the Eastern Arts Association, the Carnegie Institute Society and the National Art Educators of America. Surviving are a sister, Sister Mary Stephen Giegerich of the Pittsburgh Sisters of Mercy, a brother, the Rev.

Paul Giegerich of Heilwood, Indiana County, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, 3333 Fifth Oakland. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the convent chapel.

Obituaries Virginia J. Ward, 92, an internationally known abstract artist, died Monday at her home in Oakland's Royal York Apartments. Mrs. Ward, who studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie-Mellon University, received additional training in France as a student of such distinguished artists as Fernand Leger, Charles Depiau and Astride Maillol. She also studied under pioneer abstract artist Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Mass.

A winner of many awards, her works were exhibited in art shows in Pittsburgh, Provincetown, New York and Paris. She was a former member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh; National Association of Women Artists; Flower Arrangers Guild of Pittsburgh, and Hillcrest Garden Club. She is survived by three daughters, Katherine Parshall of Oakland; Mary Paterno of Beaufort, S.C., and Elizabeth Campbell of Sheldon, S.C.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call one hour before services which will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, in the Third Presbyterian Church Chapel, Negley and Fifth avenues, Shadyside. Burial will be private.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Marguerite I. Meleski Virginia J. Ward Marguerite Irwin Meleski, 77, a Monroeville native, died Dec. 21 in Hacienda Heights, Calif.

Mrs. Meleski is survived by a son, Frank of Hacienda Heights; a sister, Theresa Berg of Monroeville; a brother, Clyde Smeltz of Monroeville; four granddaughters, and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at the Christ Lutheran Church, 510 Clara Wilmerding.

A veteran of World War he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Public Meeting Room, same address for the following: CONTRACT NO. TSSP-1 TRANSIT STOP- SIGN PROJECT This Contract consists of the manufacturing of proximately 36,000 Bus Stop and Route Destination signs, and their installation at approximately 18,000 locations throughout the Port Authority's service area. Contractor will provide all materials, equipment, labor, and work for the completion of this project. The award of the contract, if It is awarded, will be to the lowest responsible bidder, the whose, requirements qualifications prescribed and whose qualifications are satisfactory to the Authority.

Any such award will be made within sixty (60) days after the opening of proposals provided.
