Monday, May 6, 1985 C3 The Pittsburgh Press ENTERTAINMENT Once show began, Firm wasn't super or supersludge REVIEW i But a glance at your watch revealed it was only 8:49, and the Firm already had played the best and the best-known songs from the sole album to its credit. And it was common knowledge The Firm wouldn't be playing any old Bad Company or Led Zeppelin favorites. So how do you fill up the remaining hour and 20 minutes to give fans their money's worth? With some good and some not-so-good. "Midnight Moonlight" was good, Page sitting on a folding chair to play and making his guitar sound sitar-like at times. So was "Someone to Love," much better in concert than on record and Page's playing once again more fiery.

There also was some winning staging to please the eyes: a red and green "starburst" effect from a laser light; a green, laser light square to surround Page and to rotate on the floor around him; three large mirrors that descended from trusses to provide rear, overhead views of the band. "Youve Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the Righteous Brothers' classic ballad, was not so good. Rodgers sang it soulfully enough, but the human voice can hit only one note at a time and none of his bandmates sings. Hence The Firm's rendition lacked the high-low vocal contrast that was one of the strengths of the original. On the other hand, neither did it have the oddball flatulent noises on the record.

A sluggish instrumental workout called "The Chase" was a waste of 28 minutes. It started with a seven-minute bass solo (forget Franklin's palsy-walsy ploy of sitting on the edge of the stage; you've heard better bass solos) and included seven more minutes of Page making goofy sound effects with his instrument and yet seven more minutes of a drum solo, which at least had some pizazz. Proof of its dullness was how many fans struck up and kept up conversations throughout the whole thing and how many others roamed run or two the cheers, hoots and hollers grew louder, which was both Pavlovian and comical because he certainly wasn't all that hotsy-totsy. Normally he fit very tastefully into the context of a song and definitely played well, but if you wanted virtuoso guitar playing you should have heard Johnny Winter at the arena two weeks ago. Actually, a slower tempo didn't hurt "Morning After the Night Before" from Rodgers' solo album, "Cut Loose," nor did it mar "Satisfaction Guaranteed." In fact, it revealed that the latter, on which Page's playing was a little more fiery than usual, has a nice melody.

And it made the segue segment of "Prelude" and "Money Can't Buy" more effective because you could pick up the nuances when Page made his guitar cry. "Radioactive" with its catchy dance-style beat was staged well, The Firm playing under clouds of smoke and coruscating strobes to create a cartoon-like effect. By Pete Bishop The Pittsburgh Press After being disappointed by The Firm's same-name album two months ago, I wasn't exactly thrilled to hear the quartet would be in town last night. After reading Ethlie Ann Vare's review in Billboard of their Los Angeles concert she called it) I was even less enthused. Oh well, you've got to give people a chance.

Concerts and records can be two very different things. Once a concert gets going, that is, and last night's began more than half an hour after the advertised 7:30 start The Firm didn't even arrive in the Civic Arena until 7:50. Strike one. The beginning atoned for that, though, with the stage bathed in blue lights and a tape playing a portion of "Jupiter" from Hoist's "The Planets." To a crescendo of cheering from yet another mediocre Sunday night turnout of 10,736, on came The Firm with "Closer," and a wise choice it was because it started the set with life and power, just as it does, albeit with backing horns, on the LP. The album, however, goes downhill from there, the problems being two.

First, too many songs are too slow. Second, The Firm just doesn't seem to be having much fun, and rock 'n' roll is supposed to be fun. Last night's concert didn't go downhill as badly. Indeed those slow tempos remained, but The Firm did appear to be having a good time: ex-Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers was in good voice and bassist Tony Franklin and drummer Chris Slade provided a rock-solid base for the numbers. The man the fans wanted to hear, of course, was guitarist Jimmy Page, formerly of the legendary Led Zeppelin.

Every time he played a Jimmy Page Man fans wanted to hear. or just stood in the hallways. All told, The Firm didn't do badly. "Supersludge" it wasn't, but neither was it super. 'Tracers' isn't quite on target despite its energy, good intentions By Ed Blank REVIEW effort that looks and feels like every other example of the genre: well-intentioned.

It doesn't compare wars or comment directly on how and why the veterans of Vietnam had to feel different. Except once. In a postscript that curiously precedes the explosive climax, one soldier mentions "the unwilling being led by the uneducated to do the impossible for the ungrateful." Cutting to the core of their work, the playwrights depict the fighting and the drinking and the drugs, the Dear John letters and the countdown to the end-of-time-in-service, the dying and the body bags and the piecing together of limbs that used to be someone they knew. Unlike Neil Simon in his sanitized and incomparably more congenial "Biloxi Blues," the "Tracers" writers use the language and the horrors indigenous to their settings; it should not be any other way. But what should be devastating is, instead, simply a very energetic The Pittsburgh Press NEW YORK Its reputation suggests "Tracers" might be the definitive post-Vietnam drama. "Tracers" was developed about four years ago from the collective sensibilities of eight Vietnam veterans, seven of whom appeared in early productions of it, including the premiere last winter at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater.

They were members of the Vietnam Veterans Ensemble Theatre Company. Two remain in the present ensemble of eight, directed by co-author John DiFusco, at The Public's Susan Stein Shiva Theater.
