G. Are Saturday William E. Fulton Musical Era Ends With Ace Brigode By RAY REDMOND Of Our Medina County Bureau CHIPPEWA LAKE A bed shoulders with the great fighters, and politicians of at 67. Athos C. "Ace" Brigode, the smiling maestro of the Virginians who was a personal friend of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Lawrence Welk and Paul Whiteman, will be missed by band men and dance fans from coast to coast.

Medina Countians also came to love the effervescent music maker who put aside his baton in 1948 to become publicity manager of Chippewa Park. It was the human touch, the good word, the sunny optimism of the man that will be longest remembered. Ace deplored bop music and rock 'n' roll. He kept predicting that someday danceable music would return to the nation's ballrooms. He refused to book rock 'n' roll the lat lake.

THE DECLINE of the big name bands and the falloff in attendance at the dance halls worried Ace. He insisted that dance music, should have harmony and melody. He frown on crews like Stan Kenton's and Sauter-Finnegan's, claiming they didn't play danceable music. So Ace would look for musicians who liked to follow the music and play musical standards. He pioneered the use here of an electric organ with an orchestra to produce the kind of melody he loved so well.

Back In the carefree jazz era in New York City, Brigode was a headliner in the dance band world. Ace's outfit made some of the first phonograph records including best sellers "Yessir, That's My Baby," I'll See You In My Dreams," and Alabama Bound." Ace quit the music business in 1946 at a time when the draft had taken many of his musicians and wartime transportation was a headache. At Chippewa Ace became Manager Parker Beach's right arm. He booked dance bands and variety shows, lined up factory picnics, worked up promotional layouts. DEATH caused by an old heart ailment wrote the final chapter in the happy little music man's life.
