m. Pna On Waifciartoa luff WASHINGTON Tire and tube makers go befor the Senate appropriations committee today with a renewed appeal that excise taxea on their products be lifted. The House ha paused a bit approving a partial reduction In tire and tube excise Imposed during the war. A spokesman for the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) hoped to talk the Senate group Into knocking out the taxes completely. He was prepared to settle, how-aver, for Senate agreement with the House measure plus an amendment giving dealers rebates on taxea paid on floor stocks.

THE INDUSTRY'S witness was to be Charles W. Halligan, an RMA staff man and chairman of the tire and tube manufacturers' tax committee. His and the appearances of all other witnesses before the committee were to be limited to five minutes. The industry has been advocating the lifting of excises since they first were imposed on tires and tubes as a depression revenue measure. During the war the rates were doubled to 9 cents a pound on tubes and 5 cents a pound on tires both as a revenue mersure and as a means of discouraging purchasing.

THE HOUSE, acting on a bill by Rep. Huber, Akron Democrat, allowed cuts of one fourth in both levies. Under its measure the new excise schedule will be 6 cents a pound on tubes and 34 cents a pound on tires. Huber had asked the House to cut the excises back to prewar levels and to make some provision for taxes paid on floor stocks of tires in dealers' showrooms if any cut is ordered. The House ignored it, but RMA hoped to drive home this point before the Senate committee.

Dealers would be at an obvious disadvantage in disposing of tires bought while the tax was on after the tax was lifted. Study Bible Notations In Butler Case Penciled notations in a family Bible are being studied by handwriting experts to determine whether or not Leroy A. Smith and 11 other persons In the Syracuse, N. area are entitled to inherit from the estate of the late F. Louise Butler.

Smith contends that the notations in the Bible show he has a definite relationship with the millionaire Akron recluse who died here early last year. Smith appeared at a Probate Court hearing last month to testify on the matter. Probate Judge Vincent Zura authorized the estate co-administrators to employ handwriting experts to study tho writing in the Bible in an effort to establish when the notations were made. A report on the handwriting Should be completed by next Saturday, Judge Zurz opined. Attorneys representing claimants should have briefs filed by that time, he said.

THE JUDGE will write his opinion giving a breakdown on those entitled to inherit later this month. The estate once valued at more than $1,000,000 has been whittled to $400,000 by the payment of income and inheritance taxes. Nearly 100 persons entered claims for a share in the estate during the court hearing last month.
