ARK EBBER A Columbus man who repeatedly ignored a restraining order by stalking the mother of his child has been ordered held without bond in the Bartholomew County Jail. Mateo Rincon, 20, of 412 Ninth is the defendant in five open cases filed in Bartholomew Superior Court 2. In the latest case, charged with two counts of stalking as both a Level 5 felony and a Level 6 felony. In addition, Rincon faces four misdemeanor charges of invasion of privacy and illegal consumption. What court records state as a history of domestic violence had prompted the 17-year-old mother of child to have a no-contact order issued against him.

Curbside pickup available for Christmas trees From Monday through Jan. 15, the city Department of Public Works will collect discarded live Christmas trees at curbside of residential customers. Christmas tree collection is the same day as regular trash pickup. Some rules to remember: Trees must not be in bags. Trees must be free of all decorations, nails, garland, tinsel, stands and hooks.

Trees will not be collected from alleys or private streets. Call-ins for Christmas tree pickup are not available. The Department of Public Works is open 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

LIVIA OVINGTON The first applications have come in from candidates interested in becoming the next Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. superintendent. Superintendent John Quick announced in September he would retire July 1 after 13 years as the superintendent. Quick came to BCSC in 1991 as principal of Taylorsville Elementary School and stepped into his current role as superintendent in 2003.

He will retire after 25 years in the BCSC district and 40 years in education overall. As of last week, the superintendent search committee composed of education professors from Ball State, Indiana, Indiana State and Purdue universities had received two applications for the position, BCSC school board president Bob Abrams said. AITLYN VENER ALLOONS, cake and family heralded a milestone and capped a memorable year for Irene Johnson. She celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 8 with festivities at Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus.

Even better, she enjoyed the moment with her husband Merrill, who is 103. The longtime lovebirds celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary June 21. That length of time equals average life expectancy. Together, Merrill and Irene have witnessed two world wars, the Great Depression and the Vietnam and Cold wars.
