In 1988, Cedar Point is adding a new ride called Soap City, a water slide complex that will cost $3.5 million. Geauga Lake in Aurora, Ohio, ranked 38th by Amusement Business with a 1 percent increase in attendance to 998,000. Neighboring Sea World of Ohio, which calls itself a fun park, was ranked 33rd by Amusement Business with 1.2 million in attendance.

The Amusement Business survey is widely regarded as the nation's leading published report on the amusement park industry. The numbers include complimentary admissions. Since some parks will not release exact attendance, some figures are estimates based on information released by the parks, the publication stated. (Los Angeles Timesdistributed by LA Times- Washington Post News Service) Ptmi news service Splashy new rides and innovative marketing paid off this year for the nation's amusement parks, according to a year-end survey by an industry trade publication. In its annual attendance study released this week, Nashville-based Amusement Business magazine reported that total admissions to the top 40 parks surveyed was about 117.6 million up 21 percent from last year's 97.2 million.

Leading the pack, once again, were Disney World and Disneyland. Walt Disney World and its neighboring Epcot Center of Lake Buena Vista, was far and away the most popular attraction in the United States, with 26 million or 8.75 percent more patrons this year. Disneyland is ranked second, with 13.5 million customers, up 8 percent from the prior year. As in last year's survey, California California and Universal Studios Tour all retained their 1986 slots in this year's survey. Hershey Park, in its 81st year of operation, had a record attendance year and offered three new rides: Canyon River Rapids, a white water raft ride; Snowball Express, a kiddie ride; and Frontier Meeting House, a motion illusion ride that takes riders back to the 1800's.

A spokeswoman attributed the increased attendance to good weather in mid-season and to the new rides. Kennywood dropped from 29th to 35th, despite a 9.5 percent increase in attendance over 1986, said Ann Hughes, publicity director. Cedar Point had total attendance of just over 3 million for the second straight year, but had a slight decrease from last year. A new ride was the Iron Dragon, a suspended roller coaster. Robin Innes, public relations man claimed half of the top 10 parks.

Kings Island, near Cincinnati, Ohio, ranked 7th with attendance of 3.14 million, a 9.25 percent increase, and Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, ranked 9th with 3.07 million, a 1.1 decrease. Kennywood Park ranked 35th, with 1.15 million, a 9.5 percent increase over 1986, and Hershey Park ranked 23rd with 1.73 million. "The amusement park business has been extraordinarily good this year and Southern California parks in particular have had an extremely good season. They all put a slug of money into their parks to promote them," said Nick Winslow of Torrance, Harrison Price economic consultants to the theme park industry. Of the top 40 parks in the survey, 31 reported more patrons, three had no change and only six saw fewer customers.

The sales rush doesn't fizzle after Christmas, "because it's just as cold in January and people come running in here looking for something to keep their heads warm. And before you know it, we're selling the Panama hats for summer." shops outside of New York City devoted entirely to hats, or head-wear, as it's known in the trade. This year's holiday business was up 9 percent over last year, mainly because of the increased popularity of men's dress hats, says Marcuson.

That line took a big drop around 1980, but rebounded this year. Caps are selling as strong as ever, with 1,000 dozen going over the Tucker Tucker counter this holiday season. One big seller was a cap made of acid-washed denim. Marcu-son's staff sold 20 dozen of those during the Christmas rush. "People really got back into the having to close.

He's already negotiating to open another shop away from Downtown after he moves out in February. "It's unfortunate, because I didn't come here with the intention of leaving, just like you don't get married with the intention of getting divorced," he says. "But now I realize that this merchandise just wasn't right for this building. You have to gear your merchandise to the building you're in. But I'm not giving up.

No, sir." Bill Marcuson got a job as a stockboy at Tucker Tucker Hats in 1938. He was 16 and was paid 35 cents an hour. He bought the store in 1968, and now it's one of only 18 After working in department stores in Philadelphia and Cincinnati most of his life, Hays opened his own shop in 1984. Since then he has concentrated on offering a simple line of clothes classic designs in basic colors at reasonable prices. "I knew that with the number of men in this city who have to wear a suit to work every day that's four or five suits there had to be a market for moderately priced executive clothing," he says.

"Nobody was really filling that niche." To illustrate his point, Hays pulls a gray suit from one of the racks that line the walls of the small shop. He turns the jacket inside out like he would for a customer and points to features that make a good suit full lining, hand sewing at the shoulders, suspender buttons in the trousers and thick material for the pockets. "This makes it worthwhile, all the worry and the risks," he says. "Last year was bad because we weren't established. But we started advertising twice a week, three times during Christmas, and now people know where we are." At Levin Jewelers near the Forbes Avenue entrance to Two PPG Place, passers-by first see the large hand-drawn signs on the glass walls that read "Liquidation Sale" 'and "Everything must, go." They come in to browse, and more of them are buying than ever before, says owner Sam Levin.

"I don't know if it's because the economy is stronger and people are buying more, or if it's because of the signs," Levin says. "I can't think of a better time to have a liquidation sale. People are in the buying mood, I guess." Shoppers mill about the small shop, peering into the glass-topped display cases. Levin brings out a gold chain, a ceramic flower, a crystal goblet or a small statuette for the customer to examine more closely. Much of the merchandise is marked down 40 percent.
