It may be TOO early to deck the halls for Christmas, but it's not too soon to start thinking about it. Tri Kappa Sorority members will say. The sorority is taking orders now Pharos-Tribune for fresh Christmas greenery to be delivered in December.

Kathi Hargrove, left, 4511 High St. Road, and Paulo Powlen, 1000 Claude are co-chairmen for the project. Do Husbands Really Miss Wives When They're Gone? Now that women are making business trips, someone did a survey on who was missed the most when they went out of town. Men or women? It came as a complete shock to me that overwhelmingly it was the man who missed the woman. Women loved the luxury of not having to cater to men's schedules.

They could eat a bowl of popcorn for dinner, have onions on their hamburgers and paint their toenails in bed. But the men said their loneliness had nothing to do with meals. It had to do with the companionship of having someone there at the end of the day, sharing what happened to them and providing a house bustling with activity. I would have been willing to bet that my husband could watch me being eaten by a sofa and still remain silent. I don't know how many Erma Bombeck of you are married to men who are non-talkers; but I learned early that my husband spoke only six words a of them tome.

At first, I loved the strong, silent image. I told that to a tropical fish one day after I had tried to initiate a conversation with my husband for two days He is of the old school: Talk only when you have something to say. I am of the popular school: Keep chattering and something worth say- Ing might just come out and surprise everyone. The other night my husband was following his flight pattern getting ready for his descent into the lounger in front of the TV set. "Is there anything nicer than being home?" I chided.

"Ummmm." "At least the luggage arrived with the plane." "Ummmm." "The mail really stacked up this time." "Ummmm." "Traveling is lonely." "Ummmm." "Any news?" "Ummmm." "Exhausting trip." "By the way," he said, "where did you go?" "I didn't," I said. "You did." 11 -Year-Old Model The Different Worlds Of Tamara Jones By Ellie Grossman NEW YORK (NEA) 'This kid just exploded in the last few months," says oress agent Steve Tanen- taum of his 11-year-old client, model Tamara Jones. "She makes $100-150 an and works regularly and, if she were 5 foot 8 'inches instead of 5 foot 3 inches, she'd be on the cover of As it is, she's appearing in nine commercials (White Cloud, Burger King, countless advertisements and an upcoming $6 million TV and print campaign for Sasson clothes for kids. question, "the kid" can model. And, lest any other abilitv go unnurtured, she takes' singing, dancing, horseback-riding and ice- skating lessons.

She even goes to school. In fact, "Tamara is in the top percent of the nation scholastically," says her mother, Janice, as often as possible. A teacher, Mrs. Jones was tutoring Tamara last year because work took (hem away from their Miami home so much. Now, Tamara attends a Manhattan school because the two have settled here, leaving Mr.

Jones a Baptist hospital chaplain who also models on cruise ships in Miami with Allison, 16. Naturally, Tamara misses her sister and dad but, she says, "That's the way it is. And it's sort of better to be apart because when we are together, the time is so valuable." New York, after all, is where the business is and, although Tamara likes to say that she might become a "holistic dentist who considers the whole body during treatment," she hopes to be a star first. "Actually," she says, "I try to live day by day and I can really only look into next week and that's not even certain. But my real goal is to be a good person at heart.

This business has taught me that every person is different and you can't treat people like mannequins. And," she adds, giggling, "I've also learned a lot of makeup techniques." Mrs. Jones, who's sitting two feet away reading a paperback, stifles a laugh. Precisely how Tamara's spectacular career got started isn't easy to say. Her dad, she says, had nothing to do with it followed me as a Neither, apparently, did her mom, who richochets off the subject leaving the impression that Tamara did it all by herself: that she tottered off alone at the age of 3 to audition at a local children's playhouse in Miami and, at the age of 5, negotiated her way into her first ad was for underwear, frankly," says Tamara).

Never mind. After six years in the business, the 83- pound fair-haired kid is thriving. She knows how to give them what they want and they count on her, in all kinds of ways. For instance: "The next to last day on the Sasson commercials," she says "everyone had mile-long circles under their eyes and one of the women said to me, 'Get the other kids to quiet So I said to them. 'Why don't we sit here and read "Great Tamara likes Dickens a lot, she says.

"Actually, I like 19th century books in general. Writers really had to work then. It was hard to make money, not that's it easier now, but they really had to be motivated." They needed discipline, too, which child models need, but which you can't expect from them if they haven't learned it first at home. "You can't have a mother who cracks gum and chases you with a can of hair spray and then lets you run loose," says Tamara. "That's how you get brats My mother never let me become a brat." Mrs.

Jones continues to read. But life isn't all work for Tamara, who looks like any other child her age without her makeup. And when she's not working, which means weekends, she says. "One, 1 sleep. Two, I do my homework.

Three, I clean up the house. We're in a tiny one- bedroom apartment and I really want a room of my own." She smiles meaningfully at her mother who reads on. Well, perhaps stardom will provide one. At the least, being a star will provide the perfect outlet for Tamara's social conscience. She worries, she says, about the nuclear situation and how crazy the world will go if "kids of today don't get their heads straightened out But I'd rather be a political- ly'active star than a politician because it's easier," she says.

"People usually do what stars say." Well, a star's fans probably do. Tamara's no doubt would. Even though she's not a real star yet, she has fans, of a sort. "They ask for autographs and things but nothing against them I think a fan is really someone who just enjoys listening to you, looking at you, hearing you." As for being a fan herself, she says, "It sounds conceited but my only heroine is myself. I enjoy other stars but, no offense, they haven't done anything for me." She would, however, like to have met Amelia Earhart because she was courageous and brilliant, and the suffragettes because "they had to makes $100-150 an fight tor everything But as for meeting a politically active star like Jane Fonda "If she wants to have tea with me at 4, OK, as long as she's not glowing with the China Syndrome." Tamara's mother almost falls off her chair at that one. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) Coping With Pre-Menstrual Tension Turkeys Plentiful Few women have severe cramps, but I think the average woman experiences some premenstrual tension a few days before each period. can slip up on her. It is a touchy time unless a woman and her family recognize it for what it is. The relationship between man and woman and mother and child can be Josephine Lowman seriously damaged unless she uses self-control and the family remains understanding. At this time of the month the glandular system is in turmoil and there often is a feeling of fullness. Some women gain as much as five pounds due to increased water retention.

The breasts become tender and a woman may be unnaturally tired, emotionally unstable or both. Fortunately, this lasts only a few days and is of little importance if it is handled intelligently. Major decisions should not be made during the week before menstrual periods and serious conversations should be avoided. Just laugh it off, knowing that you will return to normal shortly. If the condition is severe, consult your doctor for medical help.

I do not mean to suggest that the monthly period is either an illness or an excuse for a woman to be unpleasant or unreasonable, but rather that it is a time for awareness and understanding by those who love her. Young girls seem to be more susceptible to cramps than are women. The following exercise will give some relief: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
