The Pittsburgh Press Friday, November 29, 1985 Spirit's Ingram keeps kicking to end scoring drought By Maria Siriano The Pittsburgh Press Smack in the middle of the rainiest November in Pittsburgh history, Spirit forward Godfrey Ingram was trying to end a drought. His first goal of the season scored last week in the Spirit's 5-4 victory over Dallas provided a flood of relief. "That's the longest I'd been in my career without scoring a goal," Ingram said. "I've always read about players who'd gotten into this early in the season, but I'd never understood what it exactly feels like." Sometimes, it is best not to wonder. You might get an answer.

"It's horrible, really horrible," Ingram said. "You feel you're not contributing to the team." The Spirit (3-3) will play Tacoma (5-3) 8:05 tonight at the Civic Arena in a Major Indoor Soccer League game. The Stars are led by forwards Gary Heale (5 goals, 5 assists), Preki (3, 5) and Dale Mitchell (2, 4). Goalkeeper Mike Dewier recently named MISL defensive player-of-the-week. Ingram said he doesn't plan to do anything differently than before he ended the drought.

"Before, I was doing exactly the same things that got me loads of goals at the beginning of each season (this season,) either the defense came up or the goalkeeper came up with something or maybe it was luck. The breaks weren't going for me." Coach Don Popovic, who came to the Spirit with Ingram and four other players after the Las Vegas Americans folded, said he thought Ingram was pushing. "Maybe he was trying too hard. People are expecting a lot from Godfrey and all the new guys here," Popovic said. Ingram scored 10 goals in 23 games after joining Las Vegas in mid-season.

In 1982-83, he had 34 goals in 38 games with the Golden Bay Earthquakes. 1 "As of now, I think we can look for much more scoring from Godfrey," Popovic said. Such is precisely what the Spirit needs. They are still looking for a score-from-anywhere player. Ingram, with his exceptional quickness, might be it.

"Past the forward line, one-on-one, he can take the man easy. He has unbelievable quickness in the first 10 yards," Popovic said. "His natural ability and his technical ability probably makes him one of the best I see asound." Just as a mongoose avoids getting nailed by a snake, Ingram has the ability to dart away from defenders. "The same sort of analogy can be given to a car," he said. "If you get into trouble, you can get out of it quickly." Speed and finesse are a big part of Ingram's game.

They weren't anywhere to be found two years ago on his first indoor soccer team, Golden Bay. "That was my first introduction to indoors and I hated every single minute of it. I never wanted to play again," he said. "Then Coach Popovic came and Steve Zungul came and we started playing soccer the way I thought soccer should be played. Until then, I was ready to go back to England.

"When you play with players who are sensible and put some kind of mental effort into the game, instead of running up and hitting the boards for the sake of it, like a St. Louis or Tacoma team, then you begin to enjoy the game." With characteristic speed, Ingram has adjusted to the Spirit and the city. "At the moment, I'm living in Sewickley, which has so many qualities England has: trees, the family oriented people. The houses look the same. "And I more or less know the play of each player.

Everything just flows. It seems like I've been here forever now." D4 FOR THE RECORD CALENDAR HOCKEY FOOTBALL Sat. Sun. Mon Nov 30 Dec. 1 Dec 2 Fri.
