SEVERAL weak spots appeared In the Pirate lineup in the course of the 1929 championship campaign. Injuries hampered the squad, of course, but the complete and speedy crumbling of the team in midsummer days was caused by an unstable condition in at least two departments, the pitching staff and the infield. No doubt, efforts will be made during the winter off-season to add strengthening material to the roster. Bme talent may come here by the trade route and other players may drawn from the raft of minor leasuers already in the fold and tif-keted for a trip to the Pas Rrbles training camp next February. hailed as the underdogs of the Big Ten Conference, turned back the reputedly formidable westerners. The victory was a complete upset, a veritable spilling of every self- Lynn club of the New England league was the extent of his experience qualified to enter the big show, he showed plenty of promise. One thing that impressed the Bucro training staff last spring was the earnestness with which Chagnon went about his duties. He paid strict attention to his work, listened willingly and eagerly to instructions of veteran moundsmen and others whose duty it is to tell the youngsters just how to conduct themselves In baseball's higher circle. IMPROVED UPON KETl'KN.

Chagnon carried his desire to learn the tricks of the pitching art tn the minors when he passed out of the Pirate picture temporarily la spring. He was not disheartened by his flop to a class loop, regarding it as an opportunity to perfect his delivery, style, etc. He worked hard and returned to the Buccos a much better hurler than he was when he went away. Chagnon was employed frequently during late-season exhibition jaunts of the Buccaneers. All games in which he appeared were marked by feeble hitting on the part Of opposing batsmen.

He served up puzzling stuff and piled up a strikeout record that was a credit even if the foe was barely of minor league caliber. Finally he was rewarded by a turn cainst a National League opponent, making his first big league start in the final game of the year at Forbes Field with the Cardinals. Case plunged and pushed its way to an easy victory over the struggling Hiram eleven here today. The scientists used a strong line attack to good advantage, interspersed with a few punts, which kept the ball in the Case territory through most of the game. Cramer, Hiram halfback and former Shaw star, was outstanding with his long punts. Punting duels featured the first and second quarters, the only long run coming when Pape got away for Iowa's touchdown. Coach Bert Ingwerson replenished his line with fresh players but the tenacious Buckeye etill failed to give ground.
