Page A4 Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Tuesday, November 27,1990 Indiana Briefs Compiled from Associated Press reports School Bus Crashes; No Serious Injuries INDIANAPOLIS No serious injury resulted when a school bus struck a stalled car on Interstate 65, officials said. Twenty-eight elementary school students and two adults were taken to a hospital after the accident early Monday. The children and a bus driver were sent home Monday afternoon. The driver of a second car remained hospitalized in stable condition with minor injuries. Tim Johnson, spokesman for Wishard Memorial Hospital, said most students had complained of dizziness and minor injuries but were released to their parents.

The students, ranging in age from 7 to 12, were taken to the hospital by a second school bus sent to the accident scene, he said. The accident occurred at 8:14 a.m. as the bus was carrying pupils in first through sixth grades to School 60 on the city's northside. Witnesses said a disabled 1983 Chevrolet Malibu had been left in the center lane of the interstate while its driver went to call for a wrecker. The car was parked on northbound 1-65 just south of the 21st Street exit.

A 1986 Ford Taurus driven by Christine R. Carter. 33, of Indianapolis, struck the Malibu and shoved it into the high-speed lane as the bus was approaching. The accident tied up traffic on the interstate three hours. Former Kuwait Hostage Gives Birth EVANSVILLE, Ind.

Kokomo Group Complains Cleanup At Continental Site Not Quick Enough KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) About 10 Kokomo residents went Monday to the Superfund hazardous waste site at the former Continental Steel plant to complain that severe environmental problems have not been addressed quickly enough.

They demonstrated on the day that contaminated soil around a quarry on the property of the bankrupt steel company was scheduled to begin being shipped to a Utah landfill. Ray Murphy, a spokesman for the group, said it was told the shipping will be delayed because of problems getting clearance at the landfill. "Shipping our garbage to someone else isn't a solution," Murphy said. "It's the same as Indiana accepting garbage from other states." The group also is upset that officials have not adequately addressed contamination of lagoons at the Continental site, Murphy said. The liquid in the 20-million gallon lagoons has been neutralized and the water pumped through a wastewater treatment plant.

But the remaining sludge contains toxic metals and other undetermined contaminants, the EPA has said. The EPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have conducted removal actions at the Continental site since February. The actions included overpacking drums, testing the area, and removing asbestos. The EPA said this summer that "immediate threats to the public due to hazardous wastes on site have been allayed in that the U.S. EPA has located, temporarily contained removed certain materials that potentially could have been released off site." "There is much work left to be done by both EPA and IDEM, and the site is not considered safe for the public to enter and tour," EPA spokeswoman Karen Martin said at the time.
