Although first-week attendance was good, The Kenya Times harped, "There is not a single Kenyan who comes out strong. They are the romanticized servants whose existence seems to be owed to the presence of the 'memsahib' and their various masters." Karen Blixen, the author depicted in the film, was berated by whites in the 1920s for being pro-native.

Now some Kenyans regard her as a racist. The Kenya Times repeatedly has rebuked the government for allowing the movie to be made there, AP I fffio MASLAND 30 OFF CUSTOM AREA RUG SHOW Rt. 19, McMurray SUNDAY FEB. 23rd 1:00 to 4:00 John Heeb will show new designs in area rugs. The movie, which slowly unravels Miss Blixen's romance with Oxford-educated hunter Denys Finch Hat-ton, has little appeal for most Kenyan moviegoers who clamor for the action and violence of low-budget martial arts pictures and slick James Bond productions. However, many Kenyans have stayed away from "Out of Africa" for political reasons. During filming, charges were leveled that white extras received twice as much pay as black extras. At the same time, some Kenyans called Miss Blixen, who used the pen name Isak Dinesen, FF 2 DAYS and Huck Finn a.s old men. The actors have joked over the years about having the biggest egos and tempers in Hollywood.

Lancaster is 72, Douglas 69. Both are stars in the true sense of being able to magnetize the screen, and both have contributed several great performances. The 1980s have brought us restorations of such movies as the Judy Garland-James Mason version of "A Star Is Born," "Napoleon" and "Queen Kelly," but we're unlikely ever to see the longer version of "The Magnificent Ambersons" that Orson Welles intended. Robert Wise, who eventually won Oscars for directing "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music," was film editor on both of Welles's masterpieces, "Citizen Kane" and "The Magnificent Ambersons." Wise told The Denver Post recently that when Welles left for Brazil in the early '40s to make a movie for the U.S. government, Wise had to add scenes and chop almost 30 minutes of film from Ambersons." All the cuts were destroyed, he said, to the frustration of film historians.

Wise hasn't directed a movie since "Star Trek The Motion Picture" (1979). He's about to executive-produce "Wisdom," a film to be directed by its screenwriter-star, Emilio Estevez. Then Wise would like to direct Bette Midler in a biography of Mae' West. (Ed Blank is The Pittsburgh Press drama editor.) The Kenya Times repeated those charges during a scathing attack on the author last year and questioned why the government had allowed her story to be filmed in Kenya. Despite all the hoopla, "Out of Africa may be a financial blessing for Kenya, which is gearing up to sell Americans everything from beer to safaris. Longtime friends Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas will co-star for the sixth time on screen in "Tough Guys," a movie that just began filming in Los Angeles. It's a comedy in which they play robbers who are released from jail in 1980 after 30. years of confinement Co-stars will include Alexis Smith, Adolph Caesar and Charles Durning.

Lancaster and Douglas teamed previously in "I Walk Alone," "Gun-fight at the OK Corral," "The Devil's Disciple," "Seven Days in May" and as disguised cameo players who didn't share a scene in "The List of Adrian Messenger." A couple of years ago they also teamed for a West Coast tryout of a play called "The Boys of Summer," in which they played Tom Sawyer 621.7388 ALL WALLCOVERING ORDER FORM BOOKS PLACED now thru Feb. 23 PHONE IN ORDERS WELCOME M.C. or VISA shipped to you. with hundreds of MUM colors and styles to choose from!
