Biles said he was not forced out and his decision "surprised" oilman owner K.S.

"Bud" Adams Jr. The Oilers today were expected to name either -defensive coordinator Chuck Studley or offensive coordinator Kay Dalton as interim coach. "If I made a mistake it was violating the number one rule in coaching never follow a so-called legend," Biles said. He was referring to Phillips, who with Biles as defensive coordinator the Oilers to three playoff seasons from 1978 to 1980. The Oilers had just come home from a wildcard playoff loss to Super Bowl champion Oakland (jWhen Adams fired Phillips on New Year's Eve 1980.

Adams gave Phillips' job as general manager to assistant GM Ladd Herzeg, and Phillips' Job as coach to Biles. Some fans have never forgotten the firing of the 0only coach to have brought the team success in etheir tenure in the NFL. 3 Oilers wide receiver Mike Renfro said Phillips and Biles differed in their ability to motivate players. in "Bum brings a special feeling to a team. He rgets the players to play harder than Eddie does." Minnesota Vikings quarterback Archie Manning, whom Biles traded this season, said, "It wasn'-t that he was tough.

It's just that nobody liked him." Tight end Dave Casper, who went to the Vikings with Manning, said he will not forget Biles was the coach who benched him after five Pro Bowls. "He alienated some of the key ballplayers, traded some away and then the whole team lost confidence. He made all the mistakes his first year and then spent two years trying to correct them." Biles said his demise came without pressure from inside the organization, g- "I've been a punching bag. I've been the eye of the hurricane for 2 V2 years, the center of all controversy. I felt like I've have enough.

You get to the point where you just say who needs it. "In my own mind, I really haven't felt like I failed. I felt like I ran out of time. There's enough with what has happened to this team to pass around to a lot of people. I'm just one of them." Biles said he would take a vacation to think about his future but said "I'm a coach" and said he expected to be back in coaching.
