B6 The Pittsburgh Press Thursday, October 30,1986 OBITUARIES and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the William Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main Irwin, Westmoreland County. Private entombment was conducted at Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont, Westmoreland Lawyer gets medal for sawing Ibaby A former Pittsburgh attorney who disarmed a Philadelphia-area doctor who had repeatedly stabbed a 9-month-old boy in Regent Square was among 19 people honored as heroes today by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. Michael L.

Foreman, 31, formerly of Regent Square and now of Baltimore, "saved an infant boy from a knife assault" Jan. 1, the commission said. The doctor, Robert A. Jones, 31, died from a heart blockage caused by a self-inflicted pen wound of the aorta May 20 in the County Jail, where he was awaiting trial, the coroner's office said. The death was ruled a suicide, said Deputy Coroner Floyd Coles.

The New Year's Day stabbing was triggered by an argument between Jones and his estranged wife, Marcia Jones, 31, in her Regent Square apartment. Their child, Justin, underwent an operation in Children's Hospital for stab wounds of the back and neck. Another child, Caroline, Vh, did not require treatment. At the time, Foreman told The Pittsburgh Press, "We heard a woman (Mrs. Jones) screaming, 'Help me, help My wife, Ellen, and I went outside and saw a woman coming out of the house a few doors away.

She was screaming that her husband had stabbed her and was trying to kill their children." Foreman said he found Caroline "crying and screaming" inside the duplex, and he carried her outside. "I walked back in and found the little boy," Foreman said. "He was crying and bleeding and lying beside his father in the dining room. Both were covered with blood. The baby had been cut in the neck and the back.

"The man looked up at me. I told him to stay where he was and that everything would be all right. He was holding what looked like a steak knife in both hands. I sort of grabbed his hands and took the knife. Then I picked up the baby and carried him outside." Four of the heroes named today died trying to help others, according to the commission, which presented each of the heroes or their survivors a 32,500 cash award and a medal.

Side garage-stable ruled a horse of a different color VITAL STATISTICS REALTY TRANSFERS chairman, pointed out that the Himmelstein's property once was a 30-cow dairy farm. The Himmelsteins closed the farm in 1949. "All parties agree that cow ma-" nure creates a much more intensive nonconforming use than horse manure," Mistick wrote. "In that respect, the graudal switch from cows to horses has diminished the intensity of the non-conforming use." The Puharics moved to the North Hills in 1952, but returned to the North Side home in 1973. Mistick said they returned knowing that they were moving next to a horse farm.

Still, Mistick suggested that the Himmelsteins block the garage windows and install an exhaust system to filter out stable odors. The Himmelsteins did not disagree with that. "The board will place reasonable conditions on (using) the garage as Chester's home," Mistick wrote. "This approval also extends to Chester's friends, since after all, a horse is a horse, of course, of course." By EUen EI. Pcrlmntter The Pittsburgh Press The city Zoning Board of Adjustment today agreed to let Chester the horse continue to live in a garage with certain restrictions in a North Side neighborhood.

Joseph Himmelstein of 834 Grand his wife, Harriet, and daughter, Stacey, own the Riverview Valley Stable, which houses 21 show and riding horses on their property. The garage, the home of Chester, an 8-vear-old gelding, is about 16 feet from the Himmelstein's next-door neighbors, Stephen and Elizabeth Puharic, who complained of offensive odor from the garage. In 1937 the zoning board granted the Himmelsteins a special exception for the stable, but said nothing about using the garage to keep horses. Himmelstein said he has been isolating sick horses there.
