When President Harrison was colonel of the seventieth Indiana his regiment charged a con federate battery at Resaca, on May 15 1864, and carried it.

A few days ago the Pres dent received a souvenir of this fight frem L. Arnold of Geneeo, N. Y. It is a faded and torn old letter, which was picked up on the battlefield. There are several reddish-lookini spots on the paper which are suggestive.

The letter is as follows: RIUACA, GL, May 15, 1864. My dear wife: John Thompson is going home to Caseville wounded. I thought I would drop you a line by him. The Yanks charged on battery this m. and captured two sections it, many the men in attendance being wounded.

It was as daring an exploit as whom I my brother's battery was charged upon at An tietam by a New York regiment. They threw themselves into the fort-in his words-as un conscious of danger as so many ducks into a pond. Tell Joe and Will to store away everything of value, fearing we shall have to fall back from here. If we do the Yanks will take everything with in their reach. Hooker's command we have to fight here or else the battery would never have been taken I hear we are gaining on the Yanks in Virginia and we would have whipped them here were i not for Hooker's command.

They all wore a star. Don't answer this. If we hold our ground here I will see you ore long. I wan you should send Six and Jane to grandpa's anc you go to Uncle John's. Take all the thing n.
