FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1995 GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS Croatia wants 7 111 The Associated Press ZAGREB, Croatia The Croatian government wants NATO to send as many as 7,000 troops to police a settlement with Serbs over disputed land in eastern Croatia, a senior official was quoted Thursday as saying. Hrvoje Sarinic, a Croatian govern- ment negotiator, said the request would be raised when Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian leaders meet for peace talks next week in the United States. ''NATO will most probabh 7 come to Bosnia, and Croatia wants a parallel solution," Sarinic was quoted as saying by the daily newspaper, Slobodna Dal- matija. NATO troops, negotiator says NATO is working on a plan to send up to 60,000 troops to Bosnia to monitor a peace settlement there. Zagreb's desire to expand the force's mandate to Croatia could further complicate NATO's peacekeeping plans, already beset by criticism in the U.S.

Congress because of President Clinton's plan to include up to 20,000 American troops. An official at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, said on condition of anonymity that he was unaware of any request for NATO troops in Croatia. Negotiators have been scrambling to settle the dispute over the last Serb- controlled land in Croatia. Known as eastern Slavonia, Serbs have held it since Croatia's 1991 war of secession from Yugoslavia. Croatia has threatened to retake it force, as it did other Serb-held territory in May and August a move U.S.
