These studies still are continuing. Several weeks ago arrangements were made by the surgeon general of the army for clinical tests at the Bushnell General hospital, Brigham City, Utah. There were to be found among soldiers returned from the Pacific area 'many cases of unhealed compound fractures, esteolyelitles and wounds with long established infections. The results have been so encouraging that plans are now in process for undertaking similar wound studies in 10 general army hospitals and venereal disease studies in six. A similar although less extensive plan will be pursued by the navy.

HATTIK Dwarfing the healing powers of the famous sulfa drugs, a new miracle drug called penicillin is giving constant increasing evidence of being one of the greatest medical discoveries of the age. The new drug is reported to be hundreds of times more potent than the sulfas and will do everything that they will do and do it better without the toxic after-effects sometimes experienced with the sulfas. A smsll amount of the drug is exuded by the mold into the fluid in each flask, and it is necessary to take a gallon of the fluid or more to make a few doses of penicillin. The fluid is collected, a few gallons at a time and put through a large ice cream freezer, freezing outj the water which is then removed by a centrifugal pump. The residue is dissolved in acetone to take out the impurities. It is finally "dried" again under a vacuum of freezing temperatures. The process is said to be extremely expensive and a great deal of labor and space required.

A further stage in production is to grow the mold in batteries of shallow trays in incubators. Penicillin was discovered by Fleming in London in 1929. The first information concerning its unique therapeutic possibilities was revealed in the publications of the Lancet in 1940 and 1941 of experimental and clinical studies by Florey, Chain and their collaborators of Oxford. The intense interest in it now manifest in this country was initiated not only by those papers but by the personal communications with Professor mi-fltiiiiual the most severe case successfully treated by the new revolutionary drug was one which had reninled treatment by ordinary means for If months. Although many attempts have been made, chemists have not yet been able to analyze the mysterious and powerful healer. They are certain, however, it is a single compound and not a combination Penicillin, like the sulfas, can be Injected directly into the blood stream or between the muscles. Experiments have proved that it generally acts much faster and already has cured certain infections which the sulfas apparently could not reach. The powerful new germ-killing drug is a mossy pale green mold and is growing faster and faster in row after row of glass bottles in the laboratories of America's leading producers. EFFECTIVENESS PROVED Penicillin is known to be effective against venereal disease, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, diphtheria, gas gangrene and some of the most virulent types of blood poisoning.

It is the most effective agent known by medical science sgainst staphyococcus infection. The staphyococcus is the virulent germ types which causes boils and abscesses and many much more serious diseases, including osteomyelitis. It apparently works with extraordinary effectiveness against the much dreaded streptococcus which causes what was formerly known as blood poisoning.
