FRIDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 11,1992 THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS 3-B Holtz and Slocum make plea for playoff system Associated Press DALLAS Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz and Texas coach R.C. Slocum on Wednesday advocated a one-game playoff for the national title after the bowl games are over. "I'd favor a two-team playoff after the bowls," said Holtz. "There are usually two teams after all the bowl games are played who could make a great matchup. Say if Miami beat Alabama and Texas defeated us (the Fighting Irish) on New Year's Day.

That would make a pretty good national championship game." Slocum, who has seen his team unable to climb higher than fourth in The Associated Press poll although the Aggies are 12-0, agreed and gave a formula for picking the two teams. "I think you could setup a poll of the 36 coaches involved in bowl games and have them select the two teams for the championship game," Slocum said. "That would be a big-time game with creditability. The nation would love to see a game like that." Holtz and Slocum were in Dallas to promote their New Year's Day game. The Cotton Bowl selection committee drew criticism for passing over No.

3 Florida State to pick Notre Dame. Slocum said on selection day that he was "disappointed" but he tried to make the Cotton Bowl feel better. There's no controversy as far as I'm concerned," Slocum said. "The Cotton Bowl acted in the best interests of the Cotton Bowl. We've got a great opponent.

"It's not like they've got some mullet. Notre Dame is an equal opponent to Florida State. Notre Dame is a nationally recognized team." Holtz said he understands why fans were frustrated with the possibility of their team going undefeated but having no way to win the national title. "If defeats Notre Dame and goes undefeated, that would be a great accomplishment," Holtz said. "It's not how much you win games by.

I'd say that if a team wins close games like it means something is good about them. plays great defense, doesn't make many mistakes, runs the ball well and has a quarterback who operates efficiently within the scheme of the offense." Holtz said he believes one thing that could help the national rankings "is a computerized rating of teams. It would go by the number of wins and the quality of the opponents. It's hard to be fair to everyone but that might be a good way." COUNTY SPORTS BRIEFS The Galveston Daily News welcomes your reports of sports-related events and meetings. Duo repeats on AP All-America team Faulk, Jones top all-star list for 2nd straight year Associated Press Marshall Faulk and Marvin Jones play on opposite sides of the ball and opposite ends of the country. However, they share a distinction on the 1992 Associated Press All-America team. The San Diego State running back and the Florida State linebacker are the only repeaters on the first team, which was released Thursday. Faulk was the nation's leading rusher for the second consecutive season and became only the second major college player to gain more than 3,000 yards in his first two years.

The first was Georgia's Herschel Walker, who is also the only other player since World War II to make the AP first team as a freshman and sophomore. Despite missing 2 games due to injury, Faulk gained 1,630 yards this season and finished third in scoring with 15 touchdowns. Jones won the Lombard! Award as the country's top lineman and is a finalist for the Butkus Award, which goes to the best linebacker. He led the Seminoles with 111 tackles, including three sacks and seven others behind the line of scrimmage. Joining Faulk in the backfield are Miami quarterback Gino Torretta and Georgia running back Garrison Hearst.

Torretta is 26-1 as a starter, holds almost every career passing record at Miami and is one victory away from leading the Hurricanes to their second straight national championship. He threw for 3,060 yards this season, completed 57 percent of his attempts and had 19 touchdown passes with only seven interceptions. He already has won the Maxwell and Walter Camp awards as the best college player, and is favored to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. Hearst was second in rushing with 1,547 yards and first in scoring with 21 touchdowns, which broke Walker's Southeastern Conference record. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry, third among rushers.

The all-purpose back is Stanford's Glyn Milburn, who was second in all-purpose yardage (177 per game) and third in punt returns with an 18.5 average and three touchdowns. The wide receivers are Sean Dawkins of California and O.J. McDuffie of Perm State, and the tight end is Chris Gedney of Syracuse. The offensive line is led by Nebraska guard Will Shields, who won the Outland Trophy as the outstanding interior lineman. Rounding out the offense are center Mike Compton of West Virginia; guard Aaron Taylor of Notre Dame; tackles Lincoln Kennedy of Washington and Everett Lindsay of Mississippi; and placekicker Joe Allison of Memphis State.

The defensive line features a pair of ends from Alabama's top-rated unit, Eric Curry and John Copeland. They are joined by linemen Rob Waldrop of Arizona and Chris Slade of Virginia; linebackers Jones, Micheal Barrow of Miami and Marcus Buckley of Texas and backs Ryan McNeil of Miami, Carlton McDonald of Air Force, Deon Figures of Colorado, and Carlton Gray of UCLA The punter is Sean Snyder of Kansas State. The team includes 18 seniors and six juniors, with Faulk the only sophomore. The juniors are Hearst, Dawkins, Taylor, Allison, Waldrop and Jones. Top-ranked Miami has three players on the team, while No.

2 Alabama has two. No other school has more than one representative. Dawkins set school records for receptions (65), receiving yards (1,070) and touchdown catches (14) in a season. He now has 31 career TD catches, one short of the Pac-10 record. McDuffie caught 63 passes for 977 yards and nine touchdowns, breaking Penn State records in all three categories.

He also was one of the top punt and kick returners in the country. Gedney had 34 catches for 587 yards and five touchdowns, snapping Syracuse's season and career records for catches and receiving yardage. Shields opened holes for Nebraska's vaunted rushing attack, which led Division I-A with 328 yards per game. Taylor helped Notre Dame finish near the top in rushing, scoring and total offense. Kennedy, the biggest player on the AP team at 6-foot-7, 325 pounds, anchored a line that paved the way for Washington's high-scoring offense.

Mississippi coach Billy Brewer says Lindsay is the best Georgia running back Garrison Hearst joined Marshall Faulk and Gino Torretta in the AP All-America backfield. offensive lineman he's coached in 10 years at Ole Miss. Compton is an iron man. He didn't give up a sack this year and has missed only 15 of 1,238 offensive plays over the last two seasons. Allison, winner of the inaugural Lou Groza placekicking award, made 23 of 25 field goals and all 32 of his extra points.

Copeland and Curry were bookends on an Alabama defense that gave up fewer yards than any other team. They had 9 sacks each, forced a total of five fumbles and combined for 49 quarterback pressures. Waldrop led Arizona's smothering defense with 10 sacks and 22 tackles for loss, while Slade had 15 sacks to break the Atlantic Coast Conference career record. Barrow led Miami with 131 tackles, including a career-high 19 against Penn State, and blocked a field goal against Texas Christian. Buckley overcame a preseason leg injury to become a major force in Texas 12-0 season.

In close games against Stanford and Tulsa, he sparked the Aggies by forcing a fumble and recovering the ball. McDonald led the nation with eight interceptions and blocked a field goal, a punt and an extra point. Figures won the Jim Thorpe Award as the No. i defensive back after making six interceptions, deflecting eight passes and leading Colorado in punt returns. 1992 ASSOCIATED PRESS ALL-AMERICA TEAM AH-Amertca, Teem By Associated Press FIRST TEAM otfenee Quarterback Torretta, Miami, 6-3, 205, senior, Pinole, Calil.
