Rio, Ttwt NEWS-HERALD, Tutulav, 2MW Sweet potatoes are nutritious Sweet potatoes, one of the 12 major foods worldwide, are considered one of the most nutritious foods throughout the World. Sweet potatoes are nutritionally well balanced with their content of carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and minerals. A medium sweet potato clocks in at approximately 150 calories while providing more than twice the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A and half the daily need for Vitamin C. This tuber is rich in potassium, a mineral that aids heart rhythm and contributes to a healthy nervous system. Sweet potatoes contain all the essential amino acids and are a good source of calcium, iron, and B- Another nutritional plus is the high fiber content, often lacking in the American diet.

Texas ranks fourth nationally in sweet potato production with East Texas providing the majority of the state's crop. About 80 percent of the local sweet potato supply will be from the East Texas producers. Harvesting began in late August and will run through October. According to Belinda Boshell, marketing specialist with the Texas Department of Agriculture in the Tyler district, "due to lack of rainfall, sweet potatoes are smaller in size this season, but quality is good!" When purchasing sweet potatoes, look for those that are firm, smooth and evenly shaped. Chose those without blemishes or bruises and without sprouts or signs of decay.

Store sweet potatoes in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not store uncooked sweet potatoes in the refrigerator. Cooked potatoes will keep five to seven days in the refrigerator. For later use, freeze cooked sweet potatoes in freezer bags or other freezer containers. For more information about Texas sweet potatoes, write to the Texas Department of Agriculture, 2800 N.L.

Loop 410 Suite 301, San Antonio, Texas 78218. Dentist puts clinic on wheels By JOHN PLATE RO Associated Press Writer PERRINE, Fla. (AP) Dr. Allan Berry has the answer for hesitant individuals who don't relish going to the dentist. Stay at home.

He'll bring dentistry to you. Berry had made occasional "house calls" for years until June 1984, when he founded Mobile Dental Health to provide full-time dental service on wheels. "Anything I can do in my office can be done here, except an implant," Berry said in his 21-foot specially designed van. While this unique clinic can accommodate the reluctant patient, it is used primarily to help the handicapped, bedridden, elderly and institutionalized who otherwise would receive little or no dental care. On the road six days a week covering three counties from Key Largo to Pompano Beach, HUMPHREYS GUN SHOP 1124 E.

Carfield Berry's mobile clinic serves nursing homes, retirement villages and institutions for the mentally retarded or handicapped. At his office here where he maintains a large dental practice, Berry also has a laboratory that makes dentures for his patients. "There is no trip charge for going to wherever there is more than one patient," Berry said. However, a private call for an individual does cost an extra $50. The mobile clinic is operated by either Berry, a 50-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., native, or Dr.

Roberta Diehl, who was a dental hygeinist for almost 10 years before graduating from Ohio State University as a dentist in 1985. "I was involved in the traditional dental practice," Ms. Diehl said as she examined several mentally retarded children at a South Dade facility. "But I'm interested in people and the medically compromised. If it wasn't for this clinic these people wouldn't get dental care." The one-ton van, worth $64,500 including dental equipment, is self-contained with an electric generator, air conditioning and a 25-gallon water tank.

It includes a dental chair, sterilization and suction equipment, drills, and an X-ray machine and developer. It goes where the patient is, by appointment.

A fold-up ramp to the rear entrance allows wheelchair patients to be rolled into the clinic. A dental assistant always accompanies Ms. Diehl or Berry. When paraplegic, cerebral palsy or mentally retarded patients are scheduled, two assistants are assigned. The van usually visits several facilities a day.

"We examine patients, clean teeth, do extractions or whatever is needed," said Berry. The van has large picture windows. "In nice weather, we open the windows, the doctor sits and does his work the same as in an office," Berry said. "It's not the same four walls every day," added Ms. Diehl.

Educated in Richmond, Berry spent a year at the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, Fla. In 1963, he started a private practice in Miami, using portable equipment to care for some patients outside his office. In 1984, he converted a 1976 camper into his first mobile clinic. "It took three months and $40,000," he recalled. The need for mobile dental service in Florida is growing, Berry said.

"The population is getting older. The numbers are overwhelming on what we're going 16 have. People in nursing homes and retirement villages have almost no chance for dental service," he said. Taking a patient who is an invalid to a dentist's office usually requires at least one attendant, Berry added. "That takes time and money.

This way, we can treat several patients with one visit," he said. I--O MOTHER OLISHA HEALER AND ADVISOR Are you sick, suffering, bad luck, hair falling oul, someone crossed you? Groovey Grill something special By GINA SEAY Houston Chronicle HOUSTON (AP) Since its humble snack bar beginnings in 1942, the Third Ward's Groovey Grill has been more than just a comfortable spot to eat home cooking, and its owners, Faurice and Jessie Prince, have been more than just successful entrepreneurs. One longtime patron declares it an "institution, no question about it." integration, faithful customers say the grill was the only nice eatery where Houston's blacks could dine and mingle.

Through the years it has remained a favorite gathering place for the community, thanks to the fried chicken and the owners' hospitality. ''The Princes always represented something special," said attorney Andrew Jefferson, who has been a frequent customer since his college days. Longtime fans and area business owners honored the Princes recently with a banquet at Texas Southern University celebrating their 45 years in business. They've always worked as a team with Jessie supervising the cooks and waitresses and ordering supplies while Faurice Present this coupon for a ZOO Discount on ALL STEAKS SEAFOOD 5-7 PM Daily THE CEDARS 3710 HWY 90 I sits behind the register greeting customers. The restaurant has been located at 2619 Calumet since 1967.

It's a stately-looking two- story house that's hard to miss with towering purple columns at the entrance. Although the first floor was renovated to function as a restaurant, part of its charm is that much of the interior still looks and feels like home. The decor isn't fancy. Walls in the foyer are covered with plaques, photos of political heroes, certificates for community service and a mention from the mayor's office commemorating the Princes' 43rd wedding anniversary in 1980. The back barroom, which once was the scene of frequent cocktail parties, has shelves of black and white autographed pictures of sports greats who have dined there through the years.

A few of the visitors have been former President Lyndon B. Johnson, boxing champion Muhammad All and baseball greats like Willie Mays and Roy Campanella. Asked to recall the names of the rich and famous who have passed through her doors, Jessie just throws her head back and says, "Oh, honey She points to a table in the corner and says, "Ray Charles sat right over there two months ago." Jessie will proudly tell you this venture was her idea from the start. "He (Faurice) wasn't too OF DANCE I Ballet Tap ft jazz Gym 775-9351 775-4209 Kooooccooooooooooooocoo interested in it, but once the money was coming in. he got real interested," she laughed.

"You really want to know how we got started?" she asked. "Across from the Forward Times, there was a dairy cup where blacks had to go to the back to got an ice cream cone. "I said to myself one of these days I'm going to have an ice cream parlor so I won't have to go to the back." So she opened Princes' Hamburger Bar on Elgin Street, then catering to students attending nearby Jack Yatcs High School. Faurice had a steady job at an oil refinery so he wasn't too about sinking money into a burger joint. But it proved a hit.

In 1947, they opened a larger restaurant at Tierwester and Wheeler Avenue. This located was the first to be called Groovey Grill. Jessie says she is often asked how the name was chosen. Her response: "I laid awake and thought about it." The land for this no restaurant was acquired from a friend who had borrowed $900 from them. As payment he gave the couple the deed to the lot.

In those days, Faurice says, he called the area Frog Alley because of the many unpaved streets that flooded constantly. Jessie says two years passed before her husband would visit the property. But when construction on the newly established a Southern University began, the Princes realixed they had a potential gold mine. Students and faculty began arriving, and Jessie said. "That's when it really started "Meet me at the Groovey Grill" was the slogan around the community, she said.
