0 Futbol Internacional Tribuna Del Pueblo 2:30 CD Public Hearing CD Superchargers 39 Super Bowl XVII Highlights A recap of last year's Super ft By STEVEN REDDICLIFFE The Dallas Times Herald SOMETIMES you have to go public. It makes you feel better. And If my going public can give just one other person the courage to go public. So, to start a new year off right, or at least honestly, I think this is the time to reveal one television critic's guilty pleasure. How do you pick just one television guilty pleasure? Face it, almost all of television qualifies as a guilty pleasure.

Or at least a guilty something. At one time, maybe, the Three Stooges or "Leave It to Beaver" reruns or "Green Acres" or "Dobie Gillis" qualified as guilty pleasures, television-division. There was a time when a person might not have bragged about liking any of those shows. Watched them, yes. Enjoyed them, yes.

Admitted it, no. It was just etiquette. You didn't walk up to a perfect stranger at a cocktail party and say, "Who did you like better, Beaver, Lumpy or Eddie?" Or, "Do you really think Arnold the Pig was funnier than Mr. Ed? Now, people do not get engaged unless they hold similar views on Moe, Larry and Curly. The reason for this change is fairly simple: A lot of television's old junk is considerably better than television's new junk.

Anyone who has watched even five minutes of "Fantasy Island" will readily concur with this assessment. So "Leave It to Beaver" and "Green Acres" and "Dobie Gillis" have acquired a pop-cultural cachet they never had when they were around the first time. They are guilty pleasures gone public. So what is left? Is there any show on television people might be ashamed to admit they enjoy? After all, this is an era in which a former president (Ford) and former secretary of State (Kissinger) make guest appearances on the trashy "Dynasty." There is no shame any more. At least Walter Cronkite had the good taste to appear on an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." But yes, there is on the air one show, and one show only, that qualifies as a true guilty pleasure.

The guiltiest television pleasure of all. The show is "Three's Company." It appears Tuesday nights on ABC. Syndicated reruns appear on stations across the country. It is not in short supply. "Three's Company'' makes me laugh.

I know it shouldn't. I realize it is supposed to represent all that is wrong with contemporary television comedy. It is obvious and silly and predictable. It is dumb. It is juvenile.

But it does make me laugh. It does not make me laugh like "Cheers" or reruns of "Bob Newhart" make me laugh, but still, I laugh. This admission probably will get me a boooking on the "Phil Donahue" show. Phil will wonder aloud how I came to be afflicted with this terrible problem. A nation will feel sorry for me.

I didn't want to like "Three's Company," Really, I didn't. I tended to avoid it. But one night a few years ago, I was over at a friend's house and "Three's Company" happened to be on. We watched it for no other reason than it was there. And we found ourselves laughing at it.

My friend remarked that it was fairly strange that we were both laughing at what some critics had said was one of the worst programs on television. I would check in on the show from time to time, and it was nothing if not reliable. And I still watch it. Not every week, but often enough to know it is still my one guilty 'H i x'' IV WO. i wtajMifttitiMro jMijisWIt im-yMm television pleasure.

The appeal of "Three's Company" is not hard to figure. It is Great Bad television. Great Bad isn't hard to figure, either. It is simply television that is so terrible It's Public radio conference Monday NEWARK National Public Radio Chairman Donald P. Mullally, and NPR's president, Douglas J.

Bennet will chair a regional conference at 10 a.m. Monday on the public radio system's structures and services. The public is invited to attend the conference, to be held at the Holiday Inn Jetport West, Routes 1 and 9, across from Newark International Airport. Following NPR's financial crisis, Mullally, its new chairman, empowered a committee of station and public representaives to address issues crucial to the future of public radio. The committee will discuss and ask for comments on what services should NPR provide; how can these services be supplied most efficiently; and who should pay for these services and how.

(Great Bad is not limited to television. Certain greasy egg rolls qualify as Great Bad, as do some brands of frozen Mexican dinners. And magazines with the word "detective" in the title. You get the idea. (There is much Great Bad in the land.

And with People circulation so robust, and the ratings for "Three's Company" so high, one thinks we might well be on our way to becoming a Great Bad Society.) I don't deny that "Three's Company" is terrible. It is. The acting is not very good. The jokes are stupid. The plot lines are almost always the same.

And the premise: A young, attractive single guy, Jack (played by John Ritter), lives platonically with two young, attractive single women, Janet (Joyce DeWitt, or, as she has been called by "SCTV," Joyce De Half Witt) and Terri (Priscil-la Barnes). Janet has been a constant, but before Terri there were Chrissy (Suzanne Somers, who left in a contract dispute) and Chrissy's replacement, Cindy Jeni-lee Harrison, who was dropped in favor of Ms. Barnes). Chrissy was a Dumb Blonde. Terri is sharp.

The show is better with Terri, although it is still Great Bad. Supporting characters include the inept, middle-aged swinging single Ralph Furley (Don Knotts), the trio's landlord, and Jack's inept, swinging-single pal (circa 1977), Larry (Richard Kline). One of the show's running gags has been that the landlords (Helen and Stanley Roper in the first seasons, Furley now) think that Jack is gay. "Three's Company" is not what one would ever, ever call sophisticated. The show goes like this: One character makes a mistaken assumption about another character.

Then other characters compound the problem by making more mistaken assumptions. Then the show ends in either pandemonium or a session in which several characters review the lesson they have learned. That is it. Confusion. Swinging-single-guy jokes (circa 1977).

Fear-of-gay-guy jokes (circa 1877). General sitcom jokes. And a few pratfalls by Ritter, who is good at them. If you press most people on the subject of "Three's Company," they will admit that, all right, OK already, they do like John Ritter. (Aha! So you DO watch the show!) And Ritter is likable.

He does physical comedy well. Very decent double takes. Nice way with a dumb line (he sort of lets us know he knows it is dumb). But Ritter is just the excuse people use to watch "Three's Company." No one is fooled by it. People really watch "Three's Company" for the stupid jokes.

Like the jokes In the show about Terri's friend the nun. Enter Jack. Jack does not know Catherine is a nun. He starts putting the moves on her. "Look, Jack," Catherine says.

"Oh, I am, and I like what I see." Jack asks if she wants to go out. She demurs. Jack says that she must be a homebody, a remark he follows up with: "I wouldn't mind staying home with a body like you." A few minutes later, enter Larry. He says that he thought he and Jack could take in a movie and is there anything Jack would like to see? Jack's mind is elsewhere. "A nun is in love with me," Jack says, panic in his voice.

"Sounds kinky," Larry says. "Where is it playing?" Own" (1975) George Peppard, Oscar Homolka.
